Need a new Receiver

So the Yamaha A3080 just finally crapped the bed. I paid some cheddar along with Yamaha pitching in on repairing it last year but today, it’s a brick. To be honest, it hasn’t been right since the repair. I’m done with it.
Wife has ordered me to not buy a refurbished receiver again.

Here’s what I need. 7.1 surround sound in media room with zone 2 for pool that goes to a
Origin Acoustics VI100 volume control.
What receiver would beat suit my needs?

I would just pick one with the features you want. Denon/Marantz, Yamaha Sony, and even Onkyo seem to be reasonably reliable now.
Any of these can fail, and they are virtually unfixable out of warranty. All of the brands will have a failure rate, because of failed components the manufacturers don't make. The problem is that the manufacturers don't order enough replacement boards, and when the parts are gone, the units are unfixable. It is after warranty service that is a disgrace, and I doubt one manufacturer is better than any other in this regard.

Your quite correct, but it's a case of "You get what you pay for". and I'm quite aware that you ridicule , the high cost of the better products, Some of which carry a life time warranty. That's why they cost what they cost.
Unfortunately the cheap / budget products are churned out by the thousand, every day. As for the components, as you should know there is a discount for buying multiples. So if you order by the millions, it brings the cost right down The average production cost of your average AVR, is less then 50 dollars per unit.

First of all those lifetime warranties won't be honored. You can bet they will be out of parts in a very few years. The next thing is obsolescence. Apart from this recent failure all of my equipment replacement of digital equipment has been due to obsolescence.

Where you get the idea that the production cost is $50.00 per unit is just laugh out loud stupid. You would not buy or build the power transformer alone for that much. Not even close.
Next I do not use AVRs only AVPs.

The Yamaha RX-A6A is comparable to the A3080 with a few additional features and a few missing from the A3080. It will be familiar to those having had a Yamaha receiver.

I think you are begging for a banning. Yes, I have a lot of high end equipment ranging over 60 years. Yes, some have had issues, but there are service manuals and I have been able to keep them running in my service bay. Reel to reel recorders in particular need a lot of TLC and service. You are a very rude "twot."

Hey thank you for a recommendation! lol that’s what I was hoping to get was a few. I’m glad it was a Yamaha recommendation because their “warranty” they gave me last year on a product a few years post-warranty spoke a lot to me.

Is this a newer model or do they have something even newer with newer features? I figured if I’m spending the money, might as well go for it. My budget is open at this time but the requirements are still the same. If I have plans to replace the front bookshelf speakers with towers that can take bi-amping, would this be the best bet and just get another amp in the future? Or is that just showing off?

Just thinking outside the box here. Gotta spend some money and want to do it right from the receiver start.

Bi amping is not really necessary at all. The RX-A6A is a newer model yet to be replaced. It sits just below the RX-A8A flagship which can power eleven channels. Both feature full sets of pre outs for connection to external amps.

Hey thank you for a recommendation! lol that’s what I was hoping to get was a few. I’m glad it was a Yamaha recommendation because their “warranty” they gave me last year on a product a few years post-warranty spoke a lot to me.

Passive bi-amping is a waste of time. Just make sure the receiver has enough power to reasonable power you speakers. The big issue with speakers is impedance and that can often be hard to discern. So speakers are the most difficult to select. Just make sure you have a receiver that has a reputation for being robust. We have heard before that Yamaha have better after sales support than some of the others.

No service warranty?

Did the amp quit, controls, something else?

Is that volume control the slider or rotary type? I had a slider- type control puke and when that happened, the amp in the stereo receiver puked, too. If you have a multi-meter, check the resistance on each channel at the receiver end AND at the control- I also checked without the control or receiver connected because I wanted to know if the wires had shorted (they hadn't) but when I checked at the control, I found the problem.

What source(s) do you use for music at the pool? An AVR with app-based control would let you eliminate the volume control- I know those can be convenient, but I like to keep it simple and a volume control can add a point of failure, especially if it was installed in an outside wall and not in a closed junction box.

What is your definition of 'high end'? If it's "mass-produced stuff from Asia", try again. TLS has Quad for most of his amplification and those beat anything from Asia.

I saw that the 33 and 303 are being made again and supposedly, some engineers from the old days are still with the company but at this point, 'the old days' probably means five years ago. I watched part of a video on YouTube about 'vintage equipment and the guy has no idea about what was made in the past- called a Realistic piece 'really good' and that's when I hit the 'back' button. I'm sure he's one of the pinheads who's promoting the "For god's sake, recap all of the old equipment, so people won't die needlessly!" garbage.

It completely quit. I disconnected everything except for the power cable and it just will not power up at all. Nothing.

I think when I get my new receiver, I will get rid of that volume knob. It is a rotary. The more I read up on them, the less I want to even use it. It did make it easier since anyone is able to adjust the volume when on the patio and in the pool. Going to an app for volume, we are heavily relied on my phone for volume which is a pain if I am in the pool and I gotta get out, dry my hands just to adjust the volume. I was just being lazy with adding it in the first place .

I went to Best Buy to have a look at the different receivers and see what all my options were. They almost had me talked into the Denon AVR-X3800H and after some consideration, I went ahead and went for the glory with the Marantz Cinema 50.

Good volume controls don't usually fail and if you're familiar with a company called SpeakerCraft, at least one of the owners of that formed Origin Acoustics and their list of industry & manufacturing connections runs very deep. They were also a large installation company and they know that reliability is very high on the list of needs for these parts.

Now, if the AVR is totally lights out dead, I would unplug the power cord, remove the cover and look for fuses. If you find one that's blown, replace it and plug the power cord in again- what have you got to lose?

I always spec's the rotary controls when I could and the one time in recent memory failed I used the slider type, it took out the receiver's amplifier section, so you won't see or hear of me using that kind again. 45 years of using volume controls and the one time.....

If it has a blown fuse, I would keep it- maybe you could use it in the garage?
