I used WMP and its library feature for many, many years. I still like it and use it for simple playback but finally decided to look into higher fidelity solutions with remote control solutions that work better than what is available nowadays for WMP control apps for phones.
The two I settled on trying are Audirvana (the one-time purchase version, not the Studio with subscription model version) and JRiver Media Center.
Both do a good job of providing a library and exclusive mode playback for higher fidelity. Both offer DSD playback, which was also something I was curious to try as well.
JRiver can do a lot more as it also supports video, etc but I use it in audio-only mode. It can be a bit overwhelming with all the options, but it's also highly tweakable with all the settings available. Used as desktop interface (IE, desktop app with direct access via mouse input, etc), its customizable library filtering and selection are so incredibly good and useful and it wins hands-down in that scenario. Unfortunately, if you're going to be using an iOS/Android control app for it, those are not available from the apps, nor is the ability to simply browse by folders - which is kind of a let down and spoiler. If they ever fixed the remote app in these regards, it would be my choice hands down.
Audirvana feels more like a fancy Apple style app for users who don't want to fuss as much. Sound wise it's at least on par with JRiver (although it doesn't offer optional DSP features like Parameter EQ, etc). The app supports folder browsing and a built-in high-res subsection which is really nice if, like me, you might have multiple versions of stuff in different formats so it's what I use in my more "headless" listening setup. It seems to have some trouble with streaming ISO playback - it works but it seems to throttle buffer and is somewhat unresponsive and touchy for a bit until loads things up slowly over a minute or two on a large ISO. JRiver has no such issues.
I'd recommend giving either a try if you're looking and don't mind paying a modest fee for a better player.
