Trying to make quick decision on subwoofers - 4 SVS-PB1000 or 4 SVS-PB2000

Heya all,

Wasn't too sure if I should put this thread here or over in the subwoofer section, but I am a noob with a noob question. I have a room that is ~1600 cubic feet and I'll be getting 4 subwoofers. I already have two SVS PB1000s that are within the 45 day return window (ending today) and looking at SVSs website, they have the PB2000s in outlet for $600 each.

I'm wondering, given the size of my room and the fact I intend to get 4 subs, and I typically listen a few dB below reference levels, would the PB2000 be overkill for me? And by overkill what I mean is, if I'm not listening at reference level and my room is only a medium size, is it likely I'll be able to even hear an audible difference?

The PB200os will give you cleaner bass and deeper bass, but not by a whole lot. I think that if you are not pushing your subs hard, the PB1000s will be fine.

While I'd just prefer the more capable sub, if I already had a few PB1000s I'd probably just add more of them in your case and save the money/hassle of exchanging them.

ps curious, you have the PB1000 or PB1000 Pros now?

Okay thank makes sense, thank you both! @lovinthehd I have the PB1000s, not the pros. Was curious the difference between the PB1000 Pro and PB2000 (non-pro) and after going through threads on here and elsewhere, seems like the PB2000 is still the better performer just without the DSP options. Would you agree with that?

The PB1000 pro uses a 12" driver as well as some extra dsp features over the old PB1000. However, four PB1000s are still quite good. Really depends on your spl/extension goals but sounds like that's not a particular stumbling block.

I would get the pb2k’s myself. Especially if you’re regularly near reference level. It’s just a better subwoofer too. IMO…

Hm okay thanks all, curiosity got the better of me and I bought some PB2000s just to test out. Pretty easy return policy with SVS so no biggie. Thanks all for the input!

10” vs 12” sub if we’re talking about the 1000s. I’m not sure what’s better the pro or the 2000.

Is this a closed off (as in, actual) 1600 cu. ft. room?

@MrBoat there is a opening in the room that is the size of a typical door that goes into a very small hallway and dining area.

I set up the PB2000s and they are just a bit too big for my room and I'm not able to reeeally hear too much of a difference.

Now I am starting to get interested in sealed versus ported.

I watched this video
and found Matts points compelling.

Given I'll have 4 of these, what do you all think about moving from the PB1000 to the SB-1000 Pro. My thinking is I get a 12" sub that is smaller and has the extra DSP options versus the 10" sub thats ported.

Any opinions there? Or is this just sort of splitting hairs in the end? If it happens to matter, I'm using a Denon AVRX3800H which has 4 independent sub outputs, so I'm not sure the DSP on the Pros would be that useful or not? And I'll be using DIRAC Live 3 for correction. I'm also still scratching my head just a bit on the sealed vs ported debate but figured I would get some opinions while I continue to research that.

Thanks!

Sealed, works for me with music. I don't do HT or surround sound, though. Also, the music I listen to doesn't need much below say, 30 hz. With room gain, I get effects down into the 20s and it rumbles the whole house. I essentially use them as the '3rd way' for two-way speakers that I own so that they perform more like 3-way. I should mention that I use passive sealed subs, with external amplification which has pretty complete DSP function. Most I typically use though is the low/high pass filter, shelving filters and gain. I don't really need much in the way of correction so the settings are pretty subtle.

My room is just under 2000 cu. ft. and I could actually get by with 10" subs in here for music. If I could use ported, I likely would because my main speakers are also ported but my main speakers have 12" woofers to start with so I only use the subs to fill the very bottom.

Otherwise, there are people here with a lot more expertise at subs than I. Mine are homemade, so I basically selected drivers that would suit my particular purpose.

Gotcha, thank you! I think I'll just stick with the PB-1000s. I wouldn't imagine the sound would be too different for me and at this point my arms are sore from lifting 60lb plus subs and moving / packing them :D
