Need a little Advice

Hello All:

I have been an audio enthusiast for a number of years. Admittedly I have not kept up with the Jones over the last 10-15 years. I am currently interested in purchasing 2 new speakers. I am hoping someone can give some advice as it pertains to mixing brands. Currently I own Def Tech 2006TL (Front) BP8Bs (Rear/Side) and a Def Tech for the Center. I only have a 5.1 arrangement. It will be powered by an ATI 2005 with a refurbished Emotiva XMC-1 and I plan on adding 2 channels. Given my space is about 1000 Sq ft I narrowed down my choices to Goldenear, Def Tec D15/D17 or the Monolith Ultra Thx 460s. I am not interested in ATMOS but am a big believer in using full range speakers on all channels.

I am leaning towards the Def Tech D15/D17s but primarily due to my familiarity with their products. Any advice will be appreciated. I like keeping it simple. I am old school.

What channels are the new speakers for? Usually the matching is most important for the front three. I'm not sure any of the speakers you mention can be called full range, tho....do you use a sub or not?

I figured I would use as new fronts. As for full range, if I recall the specs correctly they were 20-20khz.... certainly not fault free through the entire range but they use to compliment my needs pretty well. I will admit it's been years since I used my system as I am in the process of fixing up my listening space or man cave.

I would likely have to buy a sub too.

Well the D15 is rated by DT as having a -3dB point of 48Hz and the D17 42 Hz. ShadyJ found good response on the D15 he tested to 39 (which is same as the other range DT publishes for the D15, 39-24000 hz). Good subs can generally do better than most speakers in the lowest range in any case, and especially with a room your size subs I would think would be the way to go in any case. I wonder how well this current DT line would match up with your center, maybe @shadyJ can help you out from his experience.

I was thinking maybe the D15/D17 will be my new fronts with the 2006TLs as my sides and the BP8Bs as rears with DT sub or SVS. My center is old too but solid its a DT CLR2300. On paper and assuming decent performance from all the built in subs I was hoping it would be pretty good. Last time I used my system I had a Bob Carver sub. It crapped out on me and I never replaced it. Thanks for your feedback and I hope @shadyJ chimes in.

I'd generally not consider Definitive Technology for subs, and their speakers with built in powered woofers I wouldn't call subs at all (the D15/D17 at least got away from that powered woofer stuff, but the passive radiators they use aren't subs either). However, their D10 and D8 sound possibly more interesting than the generation or two of subs from DT before that. I'd add Hsu, RSL, Rythmik, Monolith, to the subs to look at. Subs have come a long way since the Carver Sunfires (and the current Sunfire is not a Carver enterprise any more).

The odd part was it's just a left or right speaker and says each in one spot but in another it refers to it being two units, each costing half the price. Odd if it is a pair of dedicated lefts or rights, but hard to imagine somehow two pieces for a single speaker. Amazon has declined a lot....
