Subwoofer gain / level recommendation

Hi,

I have a small room (10 * 12 * 10) [1200 cubic feet], and a 15 inch subwoofer (SPL-150)

Sometimes I feel that subwoofer is overpowered for the room, but returning it is not an option. What can I do, to get the best out of it? The rest speakers are Klipsch RP-600M

I am using Onkyo receiver. Also, with this setup, shall I switch on AccuEq or not?

AccuEQ may help you set levels and delays (distances) better, overall it doesn't get high marks on the eq side from what I've seen. How did you match level of sub to the speakers?

That should give you basic good balance....what did you use, the avr's built in test tones with avr set to reference level?

ps How did you choose sub location/placement initially?

@lovinthehd yes I tested it with the avr's built-in test tones with avr set to reference level. unfortunately, sub's location was not chosen but just placed in the only place where it can fit

Your room is really the issue as it's likely your sub is seeing a square room, I'd start with moving the sub around the room to see if it settles down the peak you're experiencing. It would be nice to see a measurement first, as a little EQ could also solve the issue.

+1 to experimenting with Sub placement. This is what we call Positional EQ... and it is free.
Low Frequencies can be a b!tch if the Sub is in a less than ideal place. Corners are among the worst places to put a sub IMO, unless you have better skill and tools to help integrate. Corner Loading will often not only amplify the Sub, but also create muddy or boomy sound quality.

I also would receommend using the Room Correction to at least set levels and delays. Most of those programs do that pretty well at least.

My basement HT room is 8X10X7HT. After doing the AVR speaker calibration set at 1/2 volume for the calibration, I had to turn down the volume to 9 o'clock....in my case. My sub is 10".
