Avr external fan needed or not?

There is one indication for using USB fans - to prevent your AVR from shutting down due to heat.

In my previous house where the AVR probably wasn’t as well ventilated, especially in the summer, the AVR would shut down after some time while we were singing karaoke.

Then I added dual 120mm USB fans from Amazon. And the AVR never shut down again for karaoke.

I think the AVR shut down because YOU were singing karaoke.

I don’t remember the fan models from Amazon that I bought for about $20 for 2 fans.

They probably suck dust into the AVR and blow dust out of the AVR. But even without the fans, dust will get inside the AVR, amps, PC, etc.

All I can say is that the fans do work to lower the internal AVR heat and prevent the AVR from shutting down during my karaoke.

Are you saying your fans are so generic there’s no brand or model numbers?? Well in that case I can get anything or just make sure I don’t heat the avr up and stuck to no fan .

Not sure that cap rating of 105C is that common in an AVR. For instance, my 2015 year model Denon AVR-X4200W uses large caps rated at 85C and I don't know the rated life. It does get toasty inside an AVR.

Hard to tell exactly which capacitor looking at that photo, but this data sheet looks close:

Nichicon is rating these for 1000 hours at 85C. They have a higher-rated part in their audio line (LKX) rated for 2000 hours at 105C. So they aren't using the best parts in terms of endurance, but Nichicon is still quite good (maybe not as good as Rubycon but close).

I bought these fans about 10 years ago. Don’t even have them anymore. Don’t use them anymore.

Since I replied to this post with a reference to my AC Infinity cooler, guess what happened?
Amazon sent me suggestions today about a product they think I would like to buy.
You guessed it. An AC Infinity cooler.

Big Brother owns stock in ACInfinity. We had one on a Denon AVR-X3600H, because the cabinet was somewhat tight, and there were occasional shutdowns. No fan noise issue unless the volume went up and the Denon getting warm, then maybe some noise underneath the very loud music. At this location I have an old Denon AVR-2312Ci without the fan; cranking for a while will result in shutdown. Even moderate volume the unit gets pretty warm though not hot to the touch.

Is a fan necessary? Eh, perhaps not. OTOH I cannot imagine it does any harm so it's like insurance. Do ya feel lucky, punk? Well do ya? The dust...the fan on top kept off the dust as opposed to the one here which gathers tons of dust (though full disclosure, the location is different). Mmmm, even if the fan does suck in dust I would not think it to be huge, and the constant airflow reducing the dust sticking, as opposed to if the dust settles out of the air.

There are at least two models of the cooler. I chose mine because the trick to cooling electronics is not to blow cold air on them its to exhaust warm air away from the device in question. My device draws air away from the AVR with exhaust fans that empty out of the top of the AC Infinity unit. That way no dust collection issues in the AVR.

I got a great crash course in cooling electronics when we decided to do crypto currency mining with graphics cards. When you build a crypto currency mining rig the chief hurdle to keeping it alive is getting the heat away from the electronics. You can't generate enough BTU's of cool air to do that at any reasonable cost. But you can exhaust the heat away from the unit. You don't have to get the electronics cold, they are meant to run at reasonable temps. But you do have to keep excess heat away. That means exhaust not forced air cooling.

Its what CPU water coolers do and other closed loop cooling systems. They do a heat exchange and remove heat from the source. They don't really "chill" the unit, they are heat exhaustion units. Same principal with the AC Infinity. They do make units that blow directly in to the AVR. That's for folks that want a fan like affect because they think that's the best way to proceed. But drawing heat away is the more efficient method.

Sucking air into the AVR can give dust problems as well. How much of a problem that can be is, of course, dependent on how dusty the room is where the AVR is placed. If you have furry pets I would check for blockage fairly often.

Agreed, people claim all kinds of different ways, but the fact is, it can suck, blow, suck and blow at the same time, and/or suck, blow across the top rear to front, side to side, no matter what you do, you will get dust settlement.

With no fan, dust would accumulate too, I have yet to read any study in which people document the different amount of dust accumulation on the PCB and parts inside the enclosure. So until then, I would say just pick your poison.

My Denon AVR's get hot as Hades when not using ECO mode. So, I'm using one of those AC Infinity dual fan units, which keeps them much cooler. They only cost about $20.

I would say there is probably no NEED for an external AVR cooling fan in most situations.
You may want one just because its not a bad idea to exhaust heat away from electronics you wish to last a long time. When I bought my newest AVR, I decided I wanted it to live a long comfortable life so I bought an external cooling gizmo for it. It is practically invisible as its made to sit right on top of the AVR and blend in.
Its silent. It turns itself on and off when it senses heat above a certain temperature and it sucks the heat away from the AVR.

Do I need it ? Nope. Do I like it ? Yes I do.

I’m still considering adding cheap duel fans to my onkyo avr because my unused Yamaha avr died for no reason and I can’t risk losing another avr .

I have AC Infinity on all my AVRs. It's a reaction to the feedback that heat kills electronics and particularly the HDMI cards which I lost on an expensive for me Onkyo AVR a while back. I want to believe that if kept cool, my AVRs will last as long as I want them to. I really hope that's true as I want to make the choice of when to upgrade, I'd rather the choice not be made for me.

So, what I don't know how big a risk the dust issue or any other problems that these fans could pose vs. just leaving it open.

But I like knowing that they are kept cool. Welcome any thoughts on whether you think that fans can and will lead to longevity assuming a non flawed AVR and not pushed beyond reason. And also curious how long we should expect an AVR to last if kept cool

But back to the original post, yes I like the AC Infinity and I feel the investment of $70-$100 is worth it to me. (without evidence )

Yeah I don’t know if the mats go on sale I just figured the fans might be enough considering my avr does not really run hot often . And neither might work I need a fan that blows the air out the back or front probably?
I might not have Space for any fan that shoots air upward..
maybe I should just wait til they have a sale ?
