Rest in peace Jim. I want to also thank Gene and the Audioholics team for the amazing interviews they had with him and the comprehensive articles written about his work. I didn’t know Jim personally but I can certainly appreciate the immense amount of fundamental change he brought to my favorite hobby and the outside the box thinking that was conducive in doing so.

In the mid 80's I was working for the first retailer in Melbourne (Australia) who specialised in Home theatre...

We had the Fosgate decoder... this was the start of surround in the home.

Later I owned Lexicon's DC1 and then MC1 surround preamps (with Logic7), before finally switching over to the Dolby camp.

I always thought Logic 7 did a better job than Dolby with 2 channel music - but Dolby PLII did a great job - and on 3 speaker setups (L, C, R) probably better than L7.

Sadly Lexicon was absorbed into Harman and then Samsung, and Logic7/16 has been left to wither on the vine...

With no competition, Dolby has focused on movies rather than music - PLII is no longer included in the standard set of licences for AVR/AVP's (no licence fees back to Fosgate or his estate).

Dolby Surround is not bad for stereo.... and I am now dependent on auditory memory ... not reliable .. but I have a feeling that both L7 and PLII did a better job with stereo music than DS does.

I’m sad to read of Jim Fosgate’s passing. I knew Jim, Charlie, and Michael Heiss back in the day. I still have some Fosgate dipoles, which I used with my Citation 7. I’ve also still got the Citation 7.4 subs. And of course, my other speakers were Dunlavy SC 3s, with an SC 1 for the center channel. I still have three SC 1s in a closet. And Mike made sure that I got my Harmon projector, when my dealer, who had my money, strung me along for months. Six Axis was a revelation back then. CES was fun and cheep then too. Thanks so much for republished Paul Scarpelli’s article.

This article is republished in memory of Jim Fosgate who passed away 12/9/22. RIP to an industry legend. Gone but not forgotten.
Just curious, was he the creator of the Rockford Fosgate Amps I had in my car in my mid to late teens? Nevermind, google answered that question.

Lexicon’s Logic 7 was the first digital surround sound system. Fosgate’s systems for Fosgate-Audionics and Citation were analog. Later Citation had a hybrid analog/digital system. Fosgate made his big money with Dolby ProLogic II, which took his analog circuit and essentially recreated it digitall.

Huge experiment....I've owned the Fosgate Audionics Model 3A and the Citation 7.0. Recently bought a Citation 7.0 to go into my Marantz AV7706 prepro's 7.1 multi-in. I'm going to run Dirac from my PC in JRiver out to my Denafrips and into the Citation 7.0. The Citation gave multi-channel music the best sound I've ever had....Let's see if i can recreate those chills or even best them.......my fingers are crossed!!!!
