Onkyo Repair Center RETURNED Product

hello everyone

this is my 1st time in this forum and in a forum in quite a few years.
I recently purchased my 1st Onkyo product ever and want to share my thoughts about it here with you at this forum. 1st I am not rich and what I intend to do will cost me maybe a couple of days worth of eating, BUT, I think it is a way of dealing with companies that are only interested in making money and care NOT about the consumers they sell their wares to. Below is a copy and paste of what my actions are to be to launch a complain that I hope Onkyo will hear!

having just bought an Onkyo TX-NR6050 as NEW in Box from ebay at a whopping $490.00, it seems to ONLY work whenever it feels like it. Reported it to ebay and they gave me a prompt refund. Called ONKYO 3 times and you folks here are correct these people are NOT techs they only follow scripts (so SAD), so today is Dec 28, 2022 it is 1:49am here in Puerto Rico. I will attempt to figure out what the problem is with this thing and I suspect that ALL or most of the problems are related to the HDCP. I am trained as an electronics technician (AS degree in Computer's and Electronics) and computer specialist but the HDCP portion of the receiver makes getting at the root of the problem a real mess. If I cannot fix problem by 12/31/2022 I will pull out my Sony HDR-FX1 camcorder and make a video of how I will resolve the problem by dropping the unit from the roof of my 2 story house. I will then pack up as many of the PIECES as I can and box them up in the original box and spend around $60-80 to send the parts to Onkyo's Repair Center as a protest and will film and post on youtube, so look out onkyo video's a coming!!! Video will be posted on you tube as soon as I can but hopefully b4 the 15th of January 2023. Last thing I have had a Pioneer Spec 1 and Spec 2 in the 80's as well as a Pioneer SA-9800, Teac 10" reel to reel and cassette decks including one that flipped the cassette b4 the days of rewind on cassette decks (NEVERever an 8-track unit or a BETAMAX) always learned to read ALL specs prior to purchase and that served me well until now. I am a photographer/cinematographer since the age of 9, have been playing with computers since the days of the Radio Shack trash 80 and color computer. Worked at LAX TRACON for 14+ years as Air Traffic Assitant (2154) and later as an Computer(Air Traffic Control Computer Systems) Programmer and later network manager/systems engineer, so I know a little bit about chips and electronics.

Curious, was that a purchase from Onkyo themselves or why ebay as a retailer particularly? Was the packaging it arrived in original? Not understanding the particular problem nor why it can't be resolved could be interesting. Onkyo definitely has gone thru many financial issues and changes, it isn't a brand I'd purchase currently myself due all those issues.

So the unit never functioned or would function for a while and go into protection mode or what particularly? The protest you propose doesn't sound too effective, tho.Repair centers are probably not even an actual Onkyo facility, but rather a contractor working for Voxx/Premium Audio Co these days.

The unit looked new but the seller on ebay said he just added lots of tape to make sure the unit arrived in good condition without the box opening up. I call bs on that as the unit was not even 4 days old when it started screwing ulp. Regardless I come back to the HDCP because that is usually the root of ALL problems with audio/video equipment. as an example I will show you a photo of a unit I paid $500+ for which was only an audio video switcher to this date the unit will not work correctly in passing audio and video yet ALL my audio and video work properly when using a $23.00 2 port hdmi switcher which kills the hdcp copy protection, so my computer pci Hauppauge Colossus 2 can record ALL the videos I want from any HDMI input from my roku devices or my camcorder or any hdmi even those that have hdcp because the unit kills the hdcp, ergo HDCP is the problem! I don't know how old you are but I predate cassettes and 8tracks and remember the days before even the protection schemes that made copying a video tape impossible even when IT WAS LEGAL, b4 money got to the courts and they bowed to their masters! I can't send you the photo right now but give a day or 2 to find out in which closet I put the unit in and you can check what the going price was a couple of years ago when it was the hottest thing.

As to the ONKYO stuff it may or may NOT result in a change but it could have a small chance of changing their ways if enough people spread the video. To me it matters NOT if it does or not since ebay refunded me completely, but it is just a matter of right and wrong. Companies need to pay a price for shipping out defective garbage, because otherwise you the CONSUMER will always get taken like it was prior to the 50's and 60's read up on what Caveat Emptor (BUYER BEWARE) means and meant in the past. There were NO WARRANTIES at all, you bought? it worked or you trashed it, they seemed to have forgotten that.

I don't see why it's particularly an Onkyo issue, passing signal out for recording is just not a modern expectation in many cases, defeating protection is one thing but what has that got to do with the Onkyo rather than your work around gear? I'm probably as old as you in any case. Besides, you already got money from the party who did you wrong, which wasn't Onkyo.

ps I have an Onkyo avr that was repaired under an extended warranty program Onkyo put it place (for 2009-12 avrs with network/hdmi board issues). But that was a different company than the current one, particularly in the US.

Wall of texts, here's my two cents. You shouldn't be blaming Onkyo, you bought a lemon from dishonest seller, that's it. Why would you even buy a avr from ebay at all unless it was from a reputable dealer and it was said new factory sealed. You could of gotten the latest from Onkyo that has the newest HDMI 2.1 and its features, intead you bought old tech that's outdated right off the bat, it's baffling. The current Onkyo lineup the 5100 for $449 or get the 6100 for $600 on sale just recently. I got the 7100 myself and it's flawless.

So, you bought a Costco exclusive Onkyo TX-NR6050 receiver, which is current by the way, on ebay? The seller could have returned it to Costco for a full refund if it had actually been purchased there by them. Now, you are upset because the receiver is functioning properly and you cannot get around HDCP to steal copyrighted content? You received a refund. Call it a win. Or, would you care to confess to any other failed attempts at stealing copyrighted material?

ok guys here is the latest news, but 1st I will respond to some of the comments which by the way are ALL welcomed and I thank all of you who responded! The unit was supposed to be new as I stated in my earlier posts. Wether it was or not I cannot tell you for Onkyo never responded to my request of wether or not the unit had been registered before(usually a sign of used equipment since most resellers DO NOT open the box and mine showed signs of box having been opened b4, the very slim foam that covers the receiver (used to be a plastic bag taped) is now a slim foam and it showed tears in the area where the tape was attached and along the middle top and bottom of the foam near the center of the receiver. Regardless YES ebay did the right thing and FULLY refunded me for the item and did NOT do their usual 20 to 30 days of runaround before the refund, it only took 3 days, I believe they may have banned the seller as he does not show up anywhere now.

Now on for what I did not catch but my cousin who has been working with stereos and tv's for 20 years longer than I have and has the proper equipment meaning spectrum analyzers and other test equipment, plus his vast knowledge did some point to point tests on the receivers board and found 4 cold solder joints leading to and from the AMPLIFIER section ( I had seen a message on the screen that said "AMP speaker" which the so called tech at Onkyo knew absolutely nothing about. He removed the solder joints washed the area with his solder cleaner solution and board cleaning solutions and then he re-soldered the 4 joints and VIOLA the receiver works perfectly now and I have tested it in both Dolby Atmos and DTS and all works as it should. Happy for now as time will only tell if the fix is permanent or fleeting.

So sorry looks like they 2nd story drop may not happen at all or is merely postponed. On a very positive side it sounds very good in Atmos, I don't have atmos enabled speakers but I am using 2 of the 4 surrounds as height until I get a chance to drill on the cement ceiling to put the height speakers in the ceiling middle position. But that will have to wait until I empty my California King sized waterbed so I can get to the place where the middle ceiling left height speaker will be.

Once again thanks to all who gave their comments, it is that sort of help that keeps some people from going POSTAL I can say that since my mother worked for and retired from the post office 44 years after joining it in downtown Manhattan NYC,NY.

Thanks again to all and although my xmas SUCKED looks like I will be able to BLAST my Pioneer HPM-1500's to at least 60 to 70 watts, hope I don't break my new miami style glass security windows in my bedroom.

Happy new year to one and all!

Thanks!!!!!

yes I got the refund without returning the unit, it is the reason I was able to take it to my cousin's shop, only took him under an hour and it was free since when he needs help with computers I help him for free and his kids too.

some people go postal when they can't deal with their problems or the realities of this world, I instead turn to my vape machine and watch a movie and immerse my self in a sci-fi or comedy and the problems just smoke themselves away, sorry I meant vape as I have a medicinal card.

So what's the moral of the story?
That he got an easily fixed receiver for free! And that Onkyo may have some quality control issue, specifically solder joints. Years ago, iirc when manufacturers had to switch to lead free solder, there was some teething issue with bad joints. I thought those issues have been solved, but may be now that people are moving away from China to other countries, those issues resurface? Where is @M Code these days when we need him?

I laughed the other day when watching a video review of the Marantz MM8807, the newer clone 7 channel version of my 8 channel MM8003 power amp. The reviewer took the amp all apart and while he thought it was good, he did not like the build quality as the older version, the made in China MM8003 was better. He commented casually that this is one time when you wish the amp was made in China..

Happy New Year to All!!!
M Code is still around... ;)
Been awhile since posting doing some in-depth consulting for some major CE/Home Automation clients....
Also have a new grand son.. :)

The latest Marantz multi-channel amplifiers are assembled in Vietnam by Inkel/Sherwood, but still their internal components are mostly sourced from China. Regarding their respective soldering quality in Vietnam, now in 2022 this should NOT be an issue as Rohs(lead-free solder)was introduced >20 years ago. No rocket science here... But over the years we have had extensive experience with Inkel management and their various factories in Korea, China, UK.... To guarantee consistent outgoing quality requires close scrutiny/ consistent/experience monitoring for every step for the mass production process... Yet here frequently the buying brand may back off having their own quality staff on-site due to cost reasons. Also note that the unit sales volume of the Marantz component power amplifiers is quite low as the largest market shares of amplifier purchases belong to Emotiva and ATi/Monolith. Interesting to note that some of the newer Marantz integrated amplifiers such as the models 30, 40 and 50 are assembled in Japan. Additionally since United Audio was sold to Masimo(health supplier) earlier this year their brands have been struggling financially as their primary Denon brand has been trying to challenge Yamaha for the #1 market spot.

Just my $0.02... ;)

Congrats, and happy new year! Lots of fun with new grand son for sure, hope to see you check in once in a while though. So you think Denon can realistically compete with Yamaha for the #1 market spot? No wonder their pricing seems very aggressive relative to Marantz, the price gap between D and M's comparable models appears to be getting bigger and bigger.
