Recently I connected a new Klipsch SL-120 sub to Emotiva preamp fed by a bridged Crown XLS1502 amp I have inherited a low frequency buzz that only surfaces while I have it on the phono stage. All other inputs are fine. I can't track it down. It's connected with a speakon connector into an RCA cable running to the sub. I checked all the connections their fine. I hate to think it's just the Crown amp but I'm sure it's something I haven't thought of. Any feedback for those problem solvers out there.

You are pretty sparse with useful information, in fact downright parsimonious. Do you have a turntable connected to the phone stage?

If so, what turntable?

If you have a turntable, is the grounding wire connect to the grounding pin on the preamp?

Why are you using a Speakon connector with the RCA cable when the equipment has RCA jacks? The Speakon is redundant and adds nothing to the sound. Also, the Crown amp wouldn't cause this unless it's on the other side of the room, away from the preamp.

Did you read the manuals for your equipment?

Is your turntable sitting on top of the preamp or power amp? Don't do that. Don't put the tonearm next to the side of equipment where the power transformer is located, either.

Thank you for the feedback, I'm using the speakon connector because I don't have an RCA available. But you may have identified the issue. The sub IS across the room some 25" away from preamp. Turntable is isolated and grounded. I read the amp manual but figured the sub instructions were pretty straight forward. Maybe not. Thanks again for the advice.

An easy way to solve this if the hum stops when the cable to the sub is unplugged- buy an RF transmitter/receiver for the sub signal or use an isolation transformer on the audio cable to the sub. DO NOT use a three prong-two prong adapter on the sub's power cord unless it's for diagnostic purposes only- that causes the plate amp to become electrically 'hot' WRT the rest of the equipment and possibly, with the rest of the electrical service and that can be lethal. The isolation transformer and RF TX/RX are safe.

The manual may have info about hum, but they won't tell you how to deal with the electrical service because that makes them liable if someone is hurt or killed.

Is the model an SPL 120? Trying to understand why the crown amp is in the signal path?

I wondered, too- sub is connected to the Emotiva's sub out, Crown is connected to the Emotiva preamp's output.

Let alone how an amp "feeds" a pre-amp! Klipsch uses speakon now? I'm still confused somewhat but sounds like the turntable may need grounding.

He should have added "powering his main speakers" from the pre amp.

I thought Klipch uses regular sub outputs , any pics of the back how does it have speakon aren’t those for professional audio ?
Pro amps are so confusing, it’s hooked to emotiva? I couldn’t figure that stuff out would’ve just got an avr .
Good luck op . I’d need pics and it explained to how this stuff hooks together, just to make any sense of it . Separate components is so complicated.
