Does anyone know if I can use my Denon 2809ci for audio only? Currently I already do this via Optical Input from TV to AVR, but I was hoping to do this via HDMI cable.

You should have no problems doing that. You can also use a computer browser to control that receiver, if you want. In addition, the Denon app works pretty well, although it will take a bit of time to become accustomed to how it works. It won't do ARC, but if you find an AV breakout box for HDMI, it should work.

Yes you can, but I highly recommend having a TV display or monitor attached to the Denon, even if it's just a small one. I have the 2310ci and while the AVR display lets you change functions, I'm not sure that the 2809ci displays all of the information that you would see on the TV in setup mode. You shouldn't need to have a display attached to process audio but configuration changes require one. Note that it Direct mode and Pure Direct mode you can bypass signal processing and use the AVR as an integrated amp. Are there not enough inputs on the TV to allow the Denon to be connected as well?

@highfigh that model has no ethernet port or wifi. My 2310ci is 12 years old and that 2809ci seems to be similar in features. Manual is found here. I wish they would put copyright dates on the literature to make it easier to date these things.

If you mean ARC via HDMI you can try but doubt it works....and you're using the optical output of the tv to the optical input of the avr?

DOH! When I see the CI at the end of the model number, my mind goes to "Those are for the Custom Integration channel, so they have features used for installations that are more technically involved than most" and then, I realize that it's basically a typical AVR with a couple of 12V triggers and am RS-232 port. Big whoop. It seems that the ethernet/web were added in 2011.

Denon's model year can be determined in many cases by looking at the model number- this would have been from 2009, yours is from 2010. The three digit model numbers, sold through distribution only, aren't quite as easy, but a model like the AVR-991 would have been from around 2011. I'm trying to find some problems with an AVR-2313CI and that was from 2013.
