Eufy "no cloud" Security Cameras Streaming Data to the Cloud

They gave the reason as the app. When you want to get data from the camera, it obviously needs to send that data out. It is not supposed to store it though... They say they've patched it.

Cameras are for surveillance- they generally don't prevent much of anything, but the ones that have (at least) one way communication can be used to warn someone if they're up to no good.

The rest are just a way to record what happened, not to stop it.

That Eufy product is doing what it's not supposed to do. :(
They're not the first system to have problems- Arlo, Swann and others had backdoor vulnerability that allowed hackers access the DVRs and disable functions that rendered them temporarily useless. I don't trust products that want me to store data in the cloud.
