Would this scenario work:

If I had 2 (call them A & B) receivers/pre pros with 9.2 (or more) channel capabilities, and I was to split my HDMI signal from my streaming device. Then connect one of the receivers (A) to my projector, while only having the other receiver (B) connected for the audio from the sreaming device, would I be able to have 18.4 (or more) channels of surround sound?

The reason I'm asking is because I still have my Yamaha RX-A2040 receiver, and I've got a line on a Yamaha CX-A5100 for a good price, and if that scenario works I might buy it (no, I won't be hooking up 18.4 channels lol.....
maybe ), and sell my 13.3 channel pre pro.
@AcuDefTechGuy I know you have the 5100, and you love it. What are your thoughts?

No.
You have no option for remapping the speaker locations. Without that… you just have 2 processors with possibly different delay timing in each machine.
Perhaps you could find a way to run different atmos channels, heights through one, tops through the other…
You would still have to solve for bakancing levels and time issues between them.

The content doesn't have that many channels. There is no point.

The marketing people did a great job. It’s unbelievable how many people want to put 18-24 speakers in their rooms, which are smaller than my 26x22x14 room. :D

I bet if people have 26x22 rooms with 14FT ceiling, they would put 20 speakers in the ceiling. :D

I do love my CX-A5100. But I don’t see how you can combine 2 AVP/AVR to make 18CH.

How many speakers are you planning for the Bed-speakers and how many for the ceiling speakers?

You could do 7.2.4, but turn the 4 ceiling speakers into 10 ceiling speakers by wiring them in series. Also turn the 4 bed-surround speakers into 8-bed-surround speakers by wiring them in series. It won’t be “True” 18CH, but you probably won’t notice since there are so many sound’s coming from everywhere. :D

Sounds like a clustertruck to me...

I think you're just tryna satisfy an upgrade itch and are looking for something to spend your hard earned money on. I see absolutely nothing to be gained from trying to do this.

So how big is your theater?
Right now it's smallish, but my wife and I are looking for a bigger house, as both of our fathers could potentially be moving in with us in the next ~5 years. She said if we can't find one with a dedicated theatre room, I can build an entire separate building on the property as my theatre (I'm a Carpenter by trade). So I'm thinking a 12~15 person theatre (currently it's a 6 person).

No definite plans yet, but my head is always thinking/dreaming of the possibilities.
