I have used the Sherwood 4109 for at most playback with my speakers placed in every corner of the room in stereo it sounds just like surround sound with the sound filling the room and all around you with the high power of bass and highs and wattage that could simply crack your skull open with the sound of Sony Atmos with 8 15-in woofers I feel my chest wall starting to collapse from the base yes indeed you do not need a 7.1 audio visual receiver or 5.1 surround sound receiver to get the pleasure of Sony Atmos you can use an inexpensive excellent receiver that has an excellent sound and power to match for just a hundred bucks or less with the Sherwood 4109 or 4105 receivers.
Why pay more for less just pay less for more you will find these outstanding receivers on eBay some at $35 others at $75 some has free shipping others you have to pay a small shipping fee these receivers are heavy about 20 lb or more and they have the transformer to produce the Watts needed to go into two channels at 8 ohms try it for yourself you will be surprised this receiver will play awesome on any set of speakers....

No, multi pairs of speakers, each pair outputting stereo, no matter the speaker placement is not going to produce an experience just like surround sound. But it appears that, whatever the sound effects your system concept is producing, you like it so don't let anyone here discourage your pleasure with it.

Surround sound is completely different to all speakers in stereo.

You get different sounds throughout the room and not the same ones.
