Looking at denon dra-800h as upgrade for older onkyo and to add buetooth. One review said its bluetooth only supported sbc and it sounded terrible. Im sure some of u smarter than me can chime in on this subject and give some guidance. Would a external Bluetooth receiver be better choice.

Not an iphone guy so not familiar with their apps, but do have the Pandora app on my android phone and can easily use that to stream over my wifi network, I regularly use Spotify that way, too (and there are some other apps to do your own content too).

If you have an extra input, you can add a bluetooth adapter. I added a Harmon-Kardon adapter on a 30 year old receiver. It works well with my iPhone and iPad for streaming Apple Music. They still have the H-K at Amazon (though the price went up) along with other ones at different prices.

I'm a little old, too- age doesn't matter since we can still learn.

The quick answer- yes. Is it a lot better? Not necessarily- Bluetooth has come a long way in the last 5 years and this is coming from someone who's opinion until August, 2018 was "Bluetooth sucks!". Then, I found a Bluetooth receiver that has great range and very good sound. If you're on the same network, use AirPlay but first, hardwire the AV receiver to the router- it will work much more reliably.
