Those the prices on hybrids?
For a Hybrid F 150, cheapest configuration is a 46,350 and that's pretty stripped down. Gets you maybe 23 miles a gallon. Full loaded configuration its $84k
Was checking prices on a F 150 lightening recently.
Standard battery gets you 230 miles range on the cheapest model PRO for @42k. No extended battery option.
To get the extended battery option, you have to step up to the XLT.
The XLT costs min 55k with the standard battery The extended battery gets you to 300 miles but the min sticker goes to 74k.

Ended up closing a deal for a low mileage fully loaded 2020 Tacoma for @$40k that gets 22 miles per 87...

I could be wrong but I think the Tacoma and Jeep Wrangler are the top resale vehicles around, both have cult followings for sure. Good luck with your new acquisition ! My sons Tacoma is 10 years old and runs like a champ !

Electric and hybrid vehicles use a shitload of plastic and we all know that plastic is made from oil. Well, the most durable plastics are. PVC is made from Salt & oil. If the US had its head out of its butt, desalination plants would be providing the salt and taking care of a portion of the fresh water problems out West. But, well, ya know....
Actually many new vehicles including EV and Hybrid vehicles are using reusable or recycled materials not too much virgin. Yes they uses materials as you stated exist from Oil. However many new vehicles are also including plant based solutions to replace toxic oil based.

Maybe people would be more pissed off about the price of gasoline if their investment portfolios didn't contain oil stocks.
They should move out of oil to battery technology. That is the future. Oil is ancient and soon to go away by the end of the century as a fuel source. I moved out of oil over a decade ago.

Thanks. Yes, they are definitely up there. When I was younger and did the math properly, buying the right vehicle, cheap servicing cost, and depreciation play a huge role. Plan on driving it into the ground @250k.

I suspect Putin is betting on the will of the American populous to cave, after all 'the Greatest Generation' and their ability to sacrifice is well in the rearview mirror.

should have bought the Prius ! ;)

saw a guy on the news last night saying it took $400 of diesel to fill up his truck !!
Man I don’t care about the price of gasoline…I drive for recreation.

They been saying the use of oil will end soon, but what is as versatile? As a fuel source, not much has equal energy density.

Look at the resources that are needed to manufacture these batteries- lots of energy and then, what is to be done with the spent batteries? Recycling Lithium is wasteful, uses a lot of fossil fuel and the loss of material is high so it's much cheaper to just use new Lithium than to try to reclaim.

Your driving habits allow you to use this technology but for many, it doesn't work.

I support natural gas and/or trying to make it last longer, if that's possible. Hybrid seems the best bet for those living in the metro.

Does battery capacity deplete much quicker with big industrial vehicles and towing capability? Or is that not even an option?
How big are the battery advances to further justify more money and resources into the technology?
What limitations does electric have?
Is it 400 years of oil reserves we have left, or how many?
I mean if we're not going to be finding another planet to live on any time soon seems like maybe they should be pushing the hybrid in the metros since that will reduce gas consumption.

don't look at it from the opposition "one size fits all, green energy is baaaaad" dialogue....it's a "do the best that you can" issue .. just because china , russia and others aren't on board fully , if at all, doesn't mean it's a waste...

Any of you remember gas being $3.27 a gallon around 2008? What was your income then, compared to today's? Fortunately, I retired Sept 2008 and no long had to travel 105 miles for work every day. Inflation then, was worse too.

Remember gas rationing during WWII? Did you have to experience that?? Or gamble for food stamps during those times. How about the Great Depression? Would you have liked to have experienced those times?

You live through the hard and good times. The hard times, you select what luxuries are important to you, or not. Suck it up, you buttercups. :) You have not experienced nothing yet?

They're already in use for heavy duty applications-

Battery chemistry and testing is constantly advancing- as the link below shows, Caterpillar heavy excavation equipment had extremely high battery failure rates, so they developed a battery that would withstand harsh Winter conditions- Carbon Foam AGM. They're now one of the preferred battery types for medium/large boats.

The emissions from carbon-based fuels are constantly being reduced, but some countries have been very slow to see the light- China is one of the worst. Also, Europe still uses a lot of coal for energy generation, so that will need to change. The next link shows total power generation, by source- it shows that renewables will pass fossil fuel generation by 2040 but if use of fossil fuels stops, it will be a huge reduction in capacity, about 40% of all generated electric power, at the current time- hard to say how that number will change in the next 18 years.

As far as "how long will fossil fuels remain available?"- that depends on whether they keep finding new sources.

What should someone do when they can't afford ANY luxuries and their choices involve eliminating necessities? Remember the comment Romney made about 47% pay no income tax? It's over 50% now. When oil was less expensive, the US should have hoarded it like it was running out soon, so our reserves could buffer the OPEC supply variations. From the link, "OPEC agreed on Monday to extend oil supply cuts until March 2020 as the group’s members overcame their differences in order to prop up the price of crude amid a weakening global economy and soaring U.S. production."- well, US oil production sure isn't at that level now.

Hoard our oil reserves and use them for non fuel applications.
Generate as much energy as we can from lower polluting sources.
Get the government out of choosing which green industries and people to favor mainly to limit corruption.
Get the government out of artificially manipulating demand and supply. High fuel costs always punish the poor and middle class the most.
Unleash the real entrepreneurs and inventors.

The goal is cheap energy as cleanly as possible. It is necessary to any economic expansion.
