Hey Guys,
Just bought a new blu-ray dvd player, hoping to use it for cd's as well. Unfortunately, I did not verify the dvd player had rca jacks on the back, it does not, it only has one hdmi that goes to the tv. So, the only way I can listen to music cd's is by turning the tv on, which sucks. I want to run the HDMI to the reciever but alas, the old sony only takes RCA cables. So, my question is, will one of those HDMI to RCA converter boxes work? Meaning I would plug the HDMI from the DVD player into the converter, then run the RCA red and white from the converter to my receiver, so I can listen to cd's without turning on the tv? and without frying my receiver? any help please

Can you be more specific with makes/models of gear you're using?

Video disc players no longer have RCA outs.

So you will need an HDMI audio stripper. This one will even downconvert multichannel to stereo, which is a bonus.

It is an LG Streaming Blu-ray Disc/DVD Player, model BP350. The receiver is a Sony Audio/Video STR-D715.
Thanks for the reply.

Yes as TLS mentioned the analog outs are disappearing from players, altho you can still buy one with such (or other output options like digital coax or optical). So either a different player or adding a device like TLS mentions. TVs generally won't have a pass thru option to a receiver that I know of either; usually it's the other way around now, where you can put the receiver on pass-thru and use a tv separately.

Right, ok, the device TLS mentioned seems to have a price that exceeds what I can find a regular cd player for anymore. Luckily my TV does have an audio out RCA that I have run through the receiver and it does play the cd, but again I am stuck turning on the TV in order to listen to a cd. Thanks to all for the help, I am resigning to find a regular home cd player and double up yet again on components. Rock On!

I'd still stick to a bluray player, depending on budget and what discs you want to play (I find bluray/universal players far more useful), but definitely see what kind of output connections it has, at least your avr should be able to do coax/optical for digital (I didn't look, but assume that range did), let alone analog. A receiver with hdmi can be had on the used market that shouldn't cost too much and be more capable than your current model, otoh.

This is what you need,, HDMI to 1080P Component YPbPr 5RCA RGB Audio Video Converter Adapter R/L Z10A SS

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/393179174470?hash=item5b8b4e1646:g:IJAAAOSwMc5gc7sN

Or this,, Rca To HDMI 1080P Mini Rca Composite Cvbs Av Video Audio Converter

Those units do not work, and if they did are illegal. It is not legal to make or sell and HDMI to analog AV converter. The only legal and feasible option is an HDMI audio stripper.

I don't know where your coming from but , I think your talking for the sake of talking. Just show be where it tells you these converters are illegal. I link will do with the legislation. Two of the biggest retailers of electronic components in Australia, WES and Jaycar have pages and pages of these type of converters. The only difference between them and the Chinese models is the price

 And just for the record an Ill-egal is a sick bird:oops:

I don't know about Australia, but they sure are in the US.

The other issue is that a receiver is a pass through device and not an end device, like a TV. An end device only needs one HDCP code handshake, but passthrough devices need continual repeater hand shakes. I highly doubt those Australian devices would make the required handshake. At the analog sunset when all this took effect, we had a lot of those banned devices available on the NET. They were fraudulent as they had no ability to make the handshakes. It is only legal in the US to strip out the audio, not the video. This is all part of the DRM (Digital Rights Management) legislation. Converting digital AV to analog AV is a definite infringement of DRM.

The problem is those units DO NOT Work.
They work mighty fine, from what I can see.. So what happened to the illegal, banned and recalled statements you where going on about. I'll tell you what, you lost that argument with the introduction of "Parts Express" So now your saying "Parts Express" are selling faulty products. Better call consumer affairs and report them for misleading there customers. I can see it now mass demonstrations demanding there money back, You Americans are good at holding demonstrations, So break out the signs and off you go..

I can tell you that even though some may sell some rough products, it is NOT legal in the US to bypass DRM of HDMI and convert the video to analog, only stripping the audio is permitted.

Yikes. Firstly, bypassing DRM is, in fact, illegal. Secondly, the use of the word "there" when referring to the amount of customers or money possessed by more than one person is incorrect and the word "their" should have been used in its place. Now, tend to those cuts, spit that water out and get back in the center of the ring.:D

Thanks so much for all the help and input, you guys are funny. Btw, I went in a rather simple direction and bought another cd player off ebay for cheap. You all are not only funny, but very willing to help out, which is much appreciated. Watch out for those ill-egals, they are everywhere. Just remember, you gotta have fun, because if you don't have any fun, then you don't have any fun.
