New pre-amp with older receiver.

I would like to have as many of the new audio formats as possible for both music and movies. I currently have a Denon DVD-2900 sacd/dvd-a player connected with analogue cables. I have a Sony a80j oled for movies and music steaming. I would like the ability for a second subwoofer connection and possibly more channels for atmos one day (7.2.4). But that is last on my list. The speakers I use are wide dispersion, omni polar. They fill the room amazingly.

So 4K/8K video, Atmos, DTSX, Auro3D?

Yes to the formats and video. Auto room is not a must. To be honest I don't think it works very well with my speaker setup. I have mirage om-9 fronts, omc2 center and om014 rears with a bps-400 sub. The speakers are wide dispersion and designed to bounce off of walls (opposite of most speakers). You have to hear them to really appreciate them. Reading about them would turn most people off of them but when you listen, they are amazing.

I have read that article probably 50 times since it was written back in 2002. It is a great article. I am planning on doing this upgrade in stages because of money. I want to upgrade the pre-amp section first. Obviously I will get more bang for the buck this way.

Still, the indicated amp section doesn't seem particularly powerful....otoh you have it and it will work fine. Finding a reasonably priced pre that is not an avr is hard, tho.

Then the choice among pre-pros is much easier. Whichever pre-pro from Marantz, Yamaha or Anthem costs the least is the one to buy.

You could use your old Marantz AVR as the "amp" for now until you buy an amp from ATI, Parasound, Anthem, NAD, Rotel, etc.

No offence but I wasn't looking for advise that concerns my setup. I have a 5.1 setup with speakers and a t.v. that I love. My SR-18 has been serviced by Marantz and is in top working order so no concerns of it going down anytime soon. I just wanted to make sure if I bought a new pre-amp that I can use my receiver for the time being until I can afford the amps I want. As far as a 2325, I own one too and it still sounds fantastic, to say you wouldn't use one now doesn't make sense to me but to each their own.

No worries on your setup. I think I answered you question in my first post. I didn't download the manual, but I'll bet it's in there too. As for the 2325, it made it's way to one of my brothers (along with some huge JBLs and other stuff I had at the time), when I moved into Home Theater. It was the best Stereo Receiver of it's generation.
