Sub Additions or Upgrade - Recommendations?

Hi all.

Fairly new to the scene and I have been having a blast so far. However, I'm currently looking to move up from my initial setup. I have a 5.1 setup right now but plan on upgrading to a 7.2 likely in the near future and would like to start by upping to a 5.2. Currently doing some research to set myself up for success.

My current setup is as follows:
AVR: Anthem MRX 540
L/R: Focal Chora 826
Center: Focal Chora Center
Surround: Polk T15 (planning on upgrading these as well)
Subwoofer: Polk HTS-10

My listening room is about 14'x15'x8'.
I have had a blast with my setup but I still want to add/upgrade a few more things before I'm done. One of those things is my sub. For some time now I've been thinking about adding another sub to my setup.

I am definitely a bass head and love a good thump in my music and low rumbles from my movies. But I'm having a hard time deciding whether to move up from the HTS-10 altogether or to just simply add to it.

As far as budget goes I'm trying to keep it around $2500 so I have enough to do the other things I want.
My question to you all is what path would you recommend for me?

$2500 for two subs or for all of what you want to do? Polk isn't known for its subs, so I'd get rid of that one. That shouldn't be a hard decision.

One of these if that isn't just subs. Maybe 2 if it is:

Or two of these

I agree.
Good subwoofage is worth the investment. Polk Subs (and Klipsch, DefTech) are not where it's at.
Multiple Subs, placed smartly in your room, will give you very good SQ across all of your seats and then some. Whether opting for multiples or not, the other benefit of getting a Sub that operates cleanly and with plenty of headroom is that it tends to "clean up" (somewhat) your overall sound.
(Surprisingly, what most people complain about in 'too much' bass is distortion rather than actual bass... distortion is what causes many low level rattles and annoys the sensitive (i.e. significant others :p ). Good, high quality bass, that which is clean, linear, free from distortion can actually be quite subtle... until you tear down the structure around you! :D )

Beyond that, Speakers are the other major point, and frankly THE most important for SQ. Your front 3 should be the most solid you can get. Surrounds can be important, but the importance in most usage is limited (unless you are supremely picky and listening actively/critically to multichannel music such as a discrete 5.1 mix rather than simply upmixing stereo or streamed content).

Your room is large enough that you could possibly employ some Rears so long as you LP is placed properly in the room and not putting you up against the wall and those possible Rears...
However, I would focus first on getting the best quality out of your current set up as possible. ;)

The Polk Sub is the weakest link in your system.
After that, working with positional EQ to maximize everything else can lead to some significant gains in your experience, with zero to minimal expenditure. Positional EQ is making certain that you are correctly placing your Speakers and listening position to maximize their ability.

Some common, and some of the best, advice I can share is to get the best Subwoofer you can allow yourself to afford now. If you can afford two of them, do it. otherwise, save for the second and get that next. :)
Use free techniques to begin maximizing your room and other current equipment.
Then, and only then, consider expanding to a 7-channel bed-layer, or adding atmos. (I have seen many experienced cats recommend going for a well implemented 5.x.4 system rather than a 7.x.x.

Happy hunting!

The $2500 is just for the subs, and I'd be okay going slightly more. That number is the sweet spot for me right now.
After reading a lot of stuff I've come to realize that while I don't have any major complaints for the HTS-10 it sometimes distorts enough for it to be harsh when I'm listening at louder volumes (which I do pretty often).
I've seen good things about both Monoproce and SVS and have been keeping my eye on them!
Thanks for the input!

Well, the HTS is at least a better sub than some of their previous ones, but does sound like you're pushing it to its limits and beyond already. While you would gain some spl from multiple subs, you wouldn't gain extension particularly. Does this sub dig deep enough for your usual puposes? Four of them fit in the room? :) Could be an idea and well within budget. Do we have box size limits?

I'd generally just move up to bigger/better subs and go with duals, tho. If in stock something like dual Hsu VTF-3 mk5s perhaps something from Monolith....

I would go with a 5.2.2 setup, rather than a 7.1 setup. Atmos is more beneficial to your sound than 7.1 was IMO.

ONE of the subs mentioned will definitely already be a large upgrade from that HTS. With an almost square room footprint, duals likely will be better as well, since square rooms can be tougher to work with.

I've been debating whether to go for 7.2 or 5.2.2, I'll be looking into it more as I look towards future upgrades. Right now I'm trying to get my setup as best I can in either 5.1 or 5.2

Currently it gets a little hairy when listening to music or during some scenes where the bass is heavy. When it tries to push out some of the lower frequencies you can hear the distortion come from the sub. It might be due to me liking to crank the volume up a little - I'm a loud listener.
I don't think I could swing four with the current furniture situation, but I should be able to fit two of almost any box size in the room :)

@ryanosaur - for whatever reason I cannot quote your reply lol

I appreciate the detailed response and I agree with pretty much everything you've said and have done what I can to optimize my listening experience - changing speaker placement/position and using Anthem's ARC for EQ. As far as the speakers themselves go, I think I've found their sweet spot. And I don't plan on upgrading the surrounds for some time, which is why they're still what they are.

My biggest issue right now is that the sub can't quite handle what I would like to throw at it. I listen pretty loud and the distortion is noticeable at times so I want to alleviate that issue. Based on the responses from you and others seems like my best option is to leave the Polk behind and get something better for what my needs are.

From what I've seen/heard it seems like some of my better options are SVS, Monoprice, Arendal, and Hsu.
If there's any others worth looking at please let me know!

I think you just need to get to a better level of subwoofage then. Skip Polk. Use the usual selection of sub specialists.....SVS, Hsu, Rythmik, Monolith, Power Sound Audio for starters....

I was interested in the 12"s but perhaps the new 15"s might work for me as well. Where can I find both?

Not yet. It'll just be an added service charge on the page...
Enclosure 2-Pack is $ABC
Assembly 2-Pack is $XYZ
Assembly & Paint is $DEF
We're finally just recovering from the move to the new location & now have room for these services. I've done a few already & we're trying to have a few just ready to go out the door at all times (growing pains) but there's still some kinks to iron out regarding pricing & timing.
Timing of course being linked to manpower & That reminds me... Anyone In the OC, California area that wants to break into the speaker manufacturing side of things.. We're desperately searching for a few good people to work in the shop! CNC positions pay almost $30hr.
