Thoughts on Snell LCR500’s?

I’ve got an opportunity to purchase a trio of Snell LCR-500’s for $550. The mains come with the large stands and all drivers and tweeters sound great. I use M&K THX spec speakers for my height layer and have been very impressed with them overall but I’ve never owned anything from Snell. Any thoughts on these? They’re quite old and realistically I highly doubt I would replace the LSi15’s and LSiC I just picked up so more than likely I would end up selling them but I’m not sure how much profit there is if I’m paying $550. Thanks guys!

$350 is about as high as I would go, if the woofer surrounds are good and the tweeters not messed with playing fingers ... your call as Snell did make some good stuff

I've always been curious about Snell, but not enough to seek any out....

Me too, they always high end to me. I was always intrigued.

Don't think in terms of high end vs interesting design/execution.....high end to me always stinks of too much money for pretty things that don't have a lot to do with the technical aspects particularly (but nice if they at least have some technical superiority for the price, but that often seems not to be the case)

Yeah I guess I meant out of my order range, they looked very expensive. I'm always interested in what you get for the money even though I buy the best I can at much lower prices.

I think I've seen Snell at somewhat reasonable vs "high-end" pricing in any case.

So…went and listened to them. All the tweeters are shot. I mean ALL of them. The seller claimed they were in mint condition which in terms of cosmetics they were but I clearly explained I was going to test them prior to purchase and if there’s any issues please tell me before I make the 2.5hr round trip. I would like to believe he isn’t familiar enough with what speakers should sound like so didn’t notice literally HALF of the sound missing but I highly doubt that. When I say they were shot I mean they had absolutely zero output from either pair of the tweeters.

Smart choice to hear them ... He should have been honest with you ... sorry that it didn't work out

Isn't that the second time someone wasn't honest with you when looking at used speakers? Maybe I'm thinking of sometime else.

Indeed it is. I browse CL in my surrounding 3 states and always try and find the great deals. The LSi trio I just got is a great example of that. In my experience and opinion, and again this is just my opinion, but it seems like we get a lot of junkies who post things they’ve either stolen, inherited, or whatever and are solely focused on attempting to get over on the next person so they can make a few bucks. There’s a dozen times I would say over the last year that I’ve checked out some broken gear from a less than honest seller. Plenty of subs with broken plate amps, speakers with blown drivers or power amps/AVR’s that are in varying levels of disarray.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Junkies that either stole speakers or had them laying around. Didn't the first guy kinda get pissy? He was worried about his next fix.

Yeah man he tried to get a bit crazy but I’m assuming he realized that wasn’t going to work out too well for him. I guess that’s the risk you take with CL, I know for a fact there’s a guy who’s been trying to sell a pair of Cambridge Soundworks T500’s for $325 that have some issues but overall are in good shape, when I checked them out a YEAR ago I politely told elaborated on the issues and based on the price of used CSW parts if you can find them, made him an offer which he refused. Ever since that day I’ve seen him run the exact same ad filled with the same lies.

Boy you do really got to be careful. I have not bought used speakers yet, and have looked just nothing I wanted and I just upgraded my entire HT. There are 3 RSL CG5s on Facebook for 650 which I would have been all over. It's from a good used audio page from Youthman, it's his Facebook used audio page. Man I would have been all over that deal but not now since I just replaced all my speakers.

I have the Snell D7 towers and they are super. Not sure if those bookshelves also incorporated the back firing tweeter like my towers have. If you are curious about Snell, go check out the Snell designed bookshelf speakers from Outlaw. Shady reviewed them favorably too.
