Have any of you seen "Night watch"? It's in theaters now, and is a very good Russian Sci-Fi / Fantasy movie ("Lord of the Rings" meets "Prophecy"). It's been out on DVD for some time, but since Fox bought all American distribution rights, they have mandated to stop making NTSC formatted dvds of it. The disk has been slowly disappearing from even Russian stores in America. And Fox kept postponing the release until limited release on friday, while sequel "Day Watch" is already out in Russia. Both installments beat American movies in Russia. And the studio is insisting on filming the 3rd part in English. Ain't US movie studios great

Is anyone interested in talking about Russian Cinema in general?
If you are, which Russian movies have you seen, liked?
My favorites:
Sci-Fi: Solaris, Stalker, Kin-Dza-Dza, Night Watch,
Professor Dowell's Testament, Amphibian Man

War: Alexander Nevsky, Ballad of a Soldier, War,
Prisoner of the Mountains, Father of The Soldier,
100 Days Before The Command, Torpedo Bombers

Action: White Sun of the Desert, Elusive Avengers

Horror: Viy or Spirit of Evil

comedies: Ordinary miracle, Formula of Love,
Prisoner of the Caucasus, or Shurik's New Adventures
The Diamond Arm, Ivan Vasilievich changes his occupation,
The Very Same Munhgauzen, Kin-Dza-Dza, Twelve Chairs,

Okay, old post I know, but I did a quick search on "Night Watch" threads and this was basically it.

Now that's a big surprise. Night Watch is a cool film and blows away a lot of the Hollywood movies in the same genre.

Maybe it's because you guys don't have access to it if, as the OP dude says, the NTSC distribution has been stopped?

I've been patiently waiting for the release of Day Watch and it seems it was released here last month. According to IMDB it had a limited release in the US in June.

I've seen both Night Watch and Day Watch, and oh yeah, these are fun, cool flicks. (Although they're even better when watching with English subtitles on -- try it if you haven't already.)

I won Night Watch on DVD in a contest; lucky me, since they seem to be scarce. I completely forgot about looking for Day Watch on DVD. Thanks for the reminder; I'll start doing so. Day Watch was pretty cool too -- I still think about that car driving on the side of the building . . . on the big screen, that was extra WOW.

cheers,

Subtitles are always the way to go if they are readable. Until I just checked my version of the DVD I didn't even realize that there was an English dub on there!

I've been looking for the Day Watch DVD (I haven’t seen it yet!) on my usual Norwegian sites but no luck; Amazon UK will have it on 28th Jan though.

You may want to check out Frostbite (it's called Frostbitten in the US release); it's a modern day Swedish vampire movie set in Scandinavia. Well worth the watch.

I saw Night Watch and Day Watch both at the movie theatre and they showed them in Russian with subs. Then I got the DVDs and watched them in english and it was just horrible. Great movies if you watch them with the subtitles.

In general, I always recommend watching a flick with the original language and have the subtitles in whatever language you happen to speak. The reason I mention the subtitles for these particular movies is that the movie-makers decided to have a lot of fun with them, in terms of screen placement, colour, how they appear/disappear, etc. It really adds to the crazy zaniness of these two flicks.

Just an FYI, both Night Watch and Day Watch are available on Netflix (Night Watch is even available for instant viewing). Thanks to this thread, I added both to my queue.

I rented Night Watch from Netflix. Sorry, but I thought it was terrible. The characters didn't really have any powers, and can someone please explain to me what the hell "The Gloom" was?!?!
