No Sound - puzzling problem

Hi,

I posted a question here a few months ago and you all were really helpful....so I'm going to post this in hopes that you can share some thoughts on my problem.

I have a 5.1 home theater setup powered by an Onkyo TX-NR696 AV receiver. I just added an RSL 10s subwoofer. When I play music through the AV receiver the sound is just amazing. There are several different listening options with the receiver, routing sound differently to the 5 speakers. Its really fun to have so many listening options.

The odd thing is that when I turn the TV on with the subwoofer connected, the 5.1 speakers cut out. When I unplug the subwoofer the 5.1 speakers play the tv audio. Weird!

Here is my setup:

Samsung 4k TV connected to receiver via an HDMI over ethernet extender - HDMI connected to via ARC on both the TV and the receiver. This forum helped me figure out this solution since the TV is in the living room and the receiver and all the wires are in the media closet. As I mentioned, this set up sends the audio to the receiver and the receiver sends the audio out to the 5 speakers.

The 5 speakers are wired, and the sub is wired RCA adapter to coaxial cable on both ends.

Plug in the sub and the 5 speakers stop working - no TV sound to the 5 speakers. This only happens with the TV. When I play music its all great.

Although I don't remember your original post, this seems to be ARC (or eARC) related settings.

I'm assuming you use the TV Tuner and need to send that audio back to the Onkyo for processing /sound output. I expect if you turn up the TV sound when this occurs, there is sound coming from those speakers. (I'm guessing you have the volume on the Samsung all the way down if you always listen via your Onkyo.) Check those settings to see if you can tweak it so that the ARC settings do not switch to the TV speakers.

According to Samsung: Anynet + (HDMI CEC) is activated in the factory for Samsung Soundbars and Home Cinema Systems. If your device is other than Samsung Soundbar or Home Cinema System, you need to make sure that the Anynet + (HDMI-CEC) function is activated on your Smart TV. (And the Onkyo...)

When I connect the subwoofer there is sound for about a second from the home theater speakers, then it goes silent. Sound doesn't come out of the tv because it is in HDMI ARC mode sending the audio to the receiver. If I change the sound source to TV, then sound comes from the TV speakers.

As a reminder, the tv does send audio to the receiver. When I connect the subwoofer, that's when the sound stops. Also the sub works perfectly when listening to music.

Strange. What is the Sound Output setting in the TV? Tune into a channel or play something from an app. Go to Settings>Sound>Expert Settings>Digital Audio Output. What is selected for output? PCM? Dolby Digital? Dolby Digital +? Check your connections to the Onkyo. If running 5.1, they should look like this setup.

That is the strangest fault I have ever heard of.

That has to be a software bug in the Onkyo, but may be that Ethernet extender is upsetting things. A hybrid optical HDMI connection, might well be the solution.

I would make sure CEC is turned off between receiver and TV. If that does not work, I would try a hard reset. If up to three hard resets does not resolve the issue, then it probably is not fixable.

Agree, strange. But, the Onkyo supports ARC, not eARC and CEC must be on.
