I have 120w left and right speakers and 100w surround speakers. All 8Ω... Will a new Sony 725w surround receiver work with these speakers?

The receiver states it puts out 145w per channel...

Not really the way it works. Your receiver will work with the speakers just fine. The max rating of a speaker is more a limit rather than anything else, may not even sound good with max power.

Yeah the specs most companies offer are more so greatly over exaggerated… you have to have hell of an Amplifier to put 100 rms in one speaker and each channel. I’d say most avrs can not do that and these specs are often significantly higher then the actual speaker can handle… bigger numbers equal speaker sales for the uneducated.. monoblocks can do it .. and dedicated amplifiers not avr / Home theater in a box.
These numbers are typically irrelevant unless the avr is much more powerful than the Speakers himself can handle , Or under powered..
