French Catholic clergy sexually abused 216,000 children, report finds

This awful and extensive sexual abuse of hundreds of thousands children must have been covered up by the Catholic Church for many years at the highest levels, in France and elsewhere.

The Catholic Church should be prosecuted the fullest extent.

>>>
216,000 victims under the age of 18 have been sexually abused by priests and other clerics in the French Catholic Church since 1950, an investigation has found.

The landmark report was released Tuesday morning after 2.5 years of investigation. The independent commission that compiled the report was set up by Catholic bishops in France at the end of 2018.

“You are a shame to our humanity. You have trampled on the obligation of protection of life and human dignity, even though it is the essence of your profession,” said François Devaux, head of the victim group La Parole Liberée (The Liberated Word) in response to the findings.

“You must pay for all these crimes,” he added, addressing church figures in the audience at the public presentation of the report in Paris.

Jean-Marc Sauvé, chairman of the independent commission that compiled the report, explained during the press conference that the majority of victims, around 80 percent, were boys.

“A large number of the victims were aged 10 to 13 years old. Even 11 to 12 years old. These were boys. It’s a clear characteristic of the Catholic church,” said Sauvé, adding that “these numbers are more than preoccupying, they are overwhelming, and in no case can they be left without proper action.”

The Catholic Church, in multiple European countries and the U.S., has been shaken by a flood of allegations that members of the clergy have carried out wide-ranging abuse against minors for years.

How anyone can support the Catholic Church after these findings is beyond me. This isn't just a few bad apples. It's the systematic hiding and protecting of known pederasts.

I wouldn't allow my son and soon to be a second son near the church and definitely not near a priest. I think about the new times I was around priests and thank goodness wasn't around a predator or maybe I was and was lucky.

Before everyone starts ripping on the Catholic church, most major religions have this problem. It's easier to expose in the Catholic church since it has a rigid hierarchy and practices good record keeping. You would think that it's particularly bad in the Catholic church since the clergy takes vows of celibacy, but there are indicators that it's a widespread problem in all major churches. They are just better at hiding the problem since the scandals are more localized and don't have to be dealt with by national or international leadership. Keep in mind I am not defending the Catholic church at all here, and I hope the French Catholic church implodes and dissolves from this report.

Yes there are children molested by clergy in other religions, but the sheer scale of the Catholic Church clergy molesting children is breathtaking when there are hundreds of thousands victims of sexual abuse. This is just in France and for sure there are many more victims unaccounted for.

This is part of the reason I consider myself more of a spiritual person rather than a religious one. Going to church as a kid I can remember seeing the pastor drive into the parking lot in his shiny new Cadillac and thinking, WOW that's nice car, and then watched as countless old ladies, other people, and families just trying to make it, digging into their purses and wallets when the collection plate came around. It just turned me off. Religion is a business. As well as other things.. I realize it is a comfort to a lot of people though. I think we all need something to believe in..

I would argue that it has been more difficult to expose the crimes committed by Catholic clergy, rather than easier. That same rigid hierarchy you mentioned has been responsible for covering up so much abysmal behaviour, that it beggars belief. The RC Church isn't the only one with an international/national leadership, such as the Church of England or my own United Church of Canada. If I did some research, I would probably find examples of abuse cases related to either of those denominations, but the only one that comes immediately to mind is associated with residential schools for indigenous kids, here in Canada.* However, I could probably list at least a dozen such scandals involving the the Catholic church off the top of my head before I even start a Google search.

I believe a major contributor to the well out-of-proportion number of abuse scandals associated with the RC church is its patriarchal structure. It pains me to say it, but wherever we see men holding so much authority over others - military, police, education, boy scouts, etc - we keep seeing such cases of abuse. The unique characteristic of the RC church is the absolute moral authority it claims for itself and continuously fails to meet its own standards.

While the churches are front and centre with culpability, it involves various government departments and Canadian society as a whole. The US will eventually have to face up to its own version of such a system - American Indian boarding schools - Wikipedia

I've no doubt the Catholic Church isn't alone. Perhaps more investigations should be launched with more of them.

After having spent extensive time in both Afghanistan and Iraq where child brides and sexual exploitation is rampant and not quite acceptable but doesn’t raise alarms anywhere near where it should, there is no rehabilitation for people like this. They are functionally broken and as such should be liquidated as damaged assets. Full stop.

We laugh, me included, but those nut bags have huge followings and generate hundreds of millions of dollars. Money that's used for who knows what (well, at least some of it goes to hiding pederasts apparently) and building ridiculous hundred million dollar dinosaur Adventureland parks and ark encounters where people can take their kids to learn about how science is a big lie and how the ark managed to work during the great flood or how humans walked with dinosaurs.

Ken Hamm's baby.

Kent Hovind's (Dr dino) brainchild.

You know, because science is a lie. Altho the latter claims to be a "science center"... these go beyond harmless beliefs and are there for the sole purpose of of spreading misinformation and indoctrination, and people buy into it! A lot of people.

I like the AP story on the same subject with

"
Based on projections, the independent study estimates some 330,000 children overall were victims of sexual abuse linked to the church from 1950-2020. Of those, it estimates that some 216,000 were abused by priests, and the rest by other church figures such as scout leaders or camp counselors.

The study’s authors estimate 80% of the abused children were boys. A broader study of sexual abuse of children in France found that 75% of the overall victims were girls.

It would be funny if these charlatans were harmless. After reading this - Kenneth Copeland - Wikipedia - I'm left wondering how people could be so hoodwinked as to give this person and his organization so much money that clearly goes to funding lavish lifestyles. Perhaps they feel that they are investing in their own prosperity - Prosperity theology - Wikipedia.
