A little story about a drunk Republican and a drunk Democrat at the same table.

So my wife and I were invited to meet up with an old friend of hers for drinks. This friend of my wife was in town with her Aunt and they live out of state.. Texas of all places but are still Democrats. They invited some random friends and family from the area that they haven't seen in years so it was fairly large group of us. This was the first time my wife and I did anything is a public group outing since before the lockdown, around 2019 Holidays. We are both vaccinated and felt it was time to live our lives again. We had a great time, had plenty of different wines and all got along great. It was very encouraging with not a hint of politics or agendas from anyone. I felt optimistic about humanity for the first time in years.

Fast forward through the evening... we were all at a winery that was closing up at 8pm. What nonsense is that right? While some of the group went home, 6 of us decided to head up the road to another winery that was open much later. We get there, we order a few more bottles, get some snacks and find a nice table.

After maybe 20-30 minutes of talking to one another, one of the lady's in our group (The Texas Democrat) started picking the brain of the only other guy (unknown political affiliation at this time) at the table about something political. That conversation led to whether he voted for Trump or not, Covid being a hoax to manipulate people, climate change not being real and that women should be sent to jail for abortions.... At this point the winery had silenced and all the patrons were listening these two argue about this stuff. The rest of us were trying to diffuse them and let them know the entire place was listening to them. The woman point blank asked the guy what he thought about abortion. I could see he didn't want to talk about it but she kept digging at him about it since she knew he was a Trump supporter. Honestly, I blame the entire poop show on her regardless of the guy showing his true colors eventually. He eventually stated that women need to be sent to prison for abortions. A woman that could hear this debate at another table across the restaurant stood up and starting shouting at this guy all kinds of things and took her friend and stormed out of there. Other people got up and left too. (This was literally an episode of Seinfeld unfolding before my eyes but the HBO version) The guy's viewpoints cleared out the restaurant when he went on a anti abortions rant and how democrats are all fucking crazy and are to blame for the worlds problems and started swearing at and insulting the woman from the other table and the woman that asked about the abortion rights. He was triggered hard. I could see one of those cheap Chinese made MAGA hats immaculately forming on his head as he spoke.

Needles to say, the night went way south.

I tried talking the guy down that everyone has there own opinions on the matter and treating our friend that way was not cool. His argument was that women are aborting babies at nearly a week before they are born. As absurd as that is, he believed it to be true and couldn't be told otherwise. Our group slowly dissolved and my wife dragged me out of there making that guy completely shunned from the group.

It was a sad demonstration of how extreme peoples political beliefs are. The vast majority of what people believe as reality is not even true but no amount of evidence or facts will change their minds. Once someone picks a team, as with sports, they go down with the ship out of loyalty without reason.

I don't think society is ready for unity when alcohol exist.

Me and my wife educated, vaccinated, and democrats.
My wife is a pharmacist, so a massive germaphobe - we still haven't had any indoor outings since 2019.
This Monday, I took a day off to take kids to the Jersey shore to enjoy the last warm days this year.
Some kids come around to our kids and start playing with their toys. The wife due to the concern of spreading covid asks the kids to shoo. After being ignored she talks to the kids' Father. Father did as asked moving his boy away, but couldn't help himself by making this remark "Kids aren't affected by Covid"

Tell it to 5 million children with confirmed Covid-19 - https://www.aap.org/en/pages/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19-infections/children-and-covid-19-state-level-data-report/
People just don't understand while early variations were MOSTLY sparing kids from the worst of negative consequences, that doesn't prevent kids to continue spread the virus themselves.

I squarely place blame on this person misinformed on FOX, Trump, and GQP.

The conservative politicians and their media mouth pieces have only two agendas, defeat the Democrats and protect Covid. America can basically go F itself. Either be safe than sorry or be sorry and god will save me. However, I really didn't want to start a pissing match thread. I just wanted to share an experience that, comically, is stereotypical of the sides.

BTW, I don't consider myself a Democrat since I can see clear as day why Republicans get riled up over snowflake type crap. One side has no balls while the other is all sweaty balls.

20% of ICU beds for Covid in the south are Children and that's rising. The Delta variant is killing kids too and people are ignoring that fact. They also ignore that children under 12 can't get the vaccine yet.

Nailed it with the team imho, the gap is growing between parties and way to fast bc of it. I'm not saying I'm perfect and know all however, I did not vote for Biden but I do not want to see him fail either. The amount of people who want to see this happen whether it's trump or biden is ridiculous; i see it as, if they fail, we fail as a country. Unfortunately for me (and only speaking for myself) I have no choice but to support biden ugh lol and hope he gets back on top. At least I have a few friends on both sides that we can still have fun annoying each other with politics.

I used to be conservative but that was before they became a right wing fascist party. Yikes. I don't understand the hypocrisy from the evalgenicals that think Trump is the second coming of Christ. Christ never boned a porn store while his third wife was giving birth to his son. I'm pretty sure there at least a couple of sins going on there.

I lean conservative but accept that not everyone has similar views. That's cool. It takes all types and what works for New York isn't necessarily going to work in Wyoming. That's why we need compromise.

Maybe I'm just getting old. But I really don't understand what someone's sexuality has to do with anything. I really couldn't care less. I don't see how sexual preference impacts a person's ability to do there job or to be a nice person. As an employer, all I care about is can you show up for work, can you show up sober, can you do the job, can you not hurt yourself, and can you all that without pissing off my customers. As for gay customers, last time I checked their money spend just as good a straight customers. If god doesn't like gay people, well, then he'll address that at the pearly gates since he didn't before they were born. It's really not our place to say what god does or doesn't like. Live your life to your ideals and i'll live mine to mine.

AS for the healthcare hill people are dying on. I was against healthcare for all. But then I read a article about a 7 year old girl running her own lemonade stand. I'm sure it was supposed to shine the light on her, but the 7 year old girl was running the lemonade stand to raise money for her own brain surgery. Not a sibling or a friend, but her own. A 7 year old girl running a lemonade stand to raise money for the brain surgery she needs to live. We can't call ourselves the greatest nation in the world when a 7 year old girl has to run her own lemonade stand to raise money to pay for her brain surgery.

Dang, I'm getting old and ornery. My grandpa would be proud!

The thing is, we're not supposed to all agree with everything everyone says or does. Thinking people do is insane and silly.

We SHOULD be able to have political discussions with people without the name calling and the insane theories backed by nothing but BS on the internet.

It makes no sense for people to be on "teams". Especially when the leadership of those teams could give a sh!t about most/all of us.

Don't get me wrong, there are a LARGE amount of people in politics that have our interests in mind, but the ones in charge make it impossible to get things done with all the asinine fighting.

People blindly following their "party" no matter what makes no sense either. If I like a candidate, their party used to not matter to me, but now I have to wonder which republicans are just following along instead of using their own brain and making their own decisions.

Being divided hurts us all.

Some good commentary. I am an Independent. I voted for Biden and Hiilary b/4 that. The Republicans in Congress, have a lot to worry about in 2022. Long story short.

My 2 words for those that don't want to get vaccinated..........You're STUPID! End of conversation.

You and @Midwesthonky nailed it on my issues with both parties right now. Man what you said had me laughing so hard. One side has no balls the other side sweaty balls.

Summed it up perfect

I too lean conservative on a lot of things but I'm baffled why so many want to die on the Trump hill of worship. They worship this guy like a damn cult

I also dont care about gender and all the rest of that. If you love others and do a good job supporting and giving back to your community and society you can be anything your heart wants you to be. I'm cool with you whatever you want to be I'm going to respect it 100%

I can't stand how conservatives lately use religious or moralistic values to do the very thing they say as a conservative you don't want government to do. Which is be involved in regulating peoples rights. You can't tell me they give a sh$t about all those kids being aborted. What the communities need help but you want to put more babies into a community that's already messed up and broken just adding to the problem? Makes zero sense to me.

That abortion issue in Texas could really haunt Republicans in Texas. You just don't tell a voter base women in this instance what to do with there bodies period. Not a great idea to piss off people that could vote against you.

I support vaccines and respecting the science with Covid. It's not that hard to mask social distance etc etc if it helps even one person it's worth it. I've been doing it for 2 years due to hospital job. Been vaccinated and you know what? Haven't had a second head grow yet. Or had my freedoms taken away due to 2 years of following Covid protocols

Even with that I'm super pro choice about really everything. Woman have the right to do what they want with there bodies. You got the right to do what you want about the vaccine. It's stupid in my opinion if you don't take it but you got the right to be stupid if you want. Shaming or trying to force compliance has never worked on anything throughout history.

Just look at gun laws some of the strictest places in the US have the highest gun incidents. Because people will always find a way to be defiant and it costs way too much to try to force them to comply. Look at how much the war on drugs has cost and have we made a dent in it? Not even close. Just let people do what they want just enforce the consequences if they're decisions affect others balance the freedom with strong law and order applied equally to all citizens

And totally agree that we need more compromising communicating and less party tribalism. Democrats and Republicans eventually are going to have to work with each other whether they want to or not

Good thread man good conversations

We have a similar situation up here. I can't wrap my head around it. If you are HCW and an anti-vaxxer, I'm not sure I would be able to trust your judgement to treat me. It's like an astronomer who believes the earth is flat.

Regarding religion, I certainly understand where you're coming from. As a person of faith, I find the mindset of fundamentalist evangelicals very difficult to comprehend. My beliefs do not include dismissing science when it comes into conflict with faith. I support womens' right to choose and LGBTQ+ rights. I often feel like a responsible gun owner who gets lumped in with crazy gun nuts.

The atheist regimes of the Soviet Union and China are poster children for demonstrating that abandonment of religious faith won't result in a magical transformation in society to embrace science and reason as replacements. When science and reason come into conflict with communist dogma, it's the political viewpoint that tends to prevail.

I read Richard Dawkin's "The God Delusion" a couple of years ago. In one particular passage, he addresses the multiple times people have asked him, "What about the atrocities committed by the Soviet Union?", by replying, "The atrocities committed by the Soviet Union didn't happen in the name of God." This is a nonsensical response, as the crimes of the Soviet Union happened despite the fact that they were not committed in the name of God.

I'm not suggesting that anyone should or shouldn't believe in God. I'm just offering a different perspective.

Well, another major difference between you and a the evangelicals (maybe not all of them, but too many) is that you obviously posses a sense of logic and reason. Too many people fail to realize that the church pushed science forward hundreds of years ago. It also set us back in other ways, but that was a very long time ago.

Now, it seems that in the US a significant portion of religious folks have abandoned science for religion and politics. Or a religion of politics. I can say that all of my friends in TX, even the ones that are very religious, aren't anti science or anything else you talked about. We own guns, but treat them like tools instead of toys.

I don't want this to turn into any sort of religious discussion, but I just wanted to agree that you can't put everyone that likes or practices a certain thing into one box.

We all know that. We don't fit into the typical Audiophile box, and we don't want people to assume we do. We should all know to show the same respect for others in the same way.

Atheism isn't a worldview or even a belief. It's a singular response to a singular assertion- "god or gods exist". The response is "I'm not convinced". That's it. No doctrines or dogma.

I consider myself a secular humanist first and don't define myself by my lack of belief in god proposals any more than I'd define myself by my lack of belief in bigfoot or Santa Claus. What happened in Russia and China isn't a result of atheism any more than their lack of belief in the Easter bunny, and was certainly as far from secular humanism as it gets.
