Best Bargain-Basement Boom-Boom?

I know there's lots of good subs out there and there's lots of good values, but holy heck, JBL SUB550P's at the $199 sale price (delivered) has gotta be hard to beat on the lower end of the subwoofer market. I like'em so much I didn't buy the company but I bought four of the subs. I use two in my stereo rig and two in our a/v room. 50 pound sealed box, 10" cast-basket driver and a 300W (500W peak) amp. Huzzah! Feature set is minimal, but still... That said, I don't know if I want to see an actual hands-on test. I might get my bubble burst. Tell me of some other good bottom-feeder deals out there!

Those JBL deals are straight legit. That is not a bad sub at all, especially compared to what's in the same price range. I'd imagine 4 of them in the same room has good potential for legit ufl performance. Or in your case even 2 per room wouldn't be bad. $199 is a crazy good price. They usually run those with the 5 series speakers too.

Yep. I've got one in my office. It's a very good sub, but it's lacks the real low LFE capability. I'd say the specs are correct and it rolls off quick under the f3 or 25hz or so.

It sounds great though. I'm happy with it, but it might be getting a buddy soon if I feel like putting in the effort.

I'll bet you can get some usable bass down close to 20 hz with decent spl in a good sized room with 4 of them. That's not bad at all for under $800.

Honestly, I have never lost any sleep over what I may be missing below 30Hz. But then I'm mostly a 2-channel music lover. HT is not my passion.

Speaking of 2-channel, in my 2-channel room I run the mains (Studio 590's) full range and roll off the pair of 550P's above 40 Hz. My mains don't really need subs for most music but they do smooth out and firm up the bottom ocatave and a half or so.

No, 4 would be excellent. I'd be in for similar capability of the subs in my theater, but in a smaller room (for me). I'll have to play around with some test tones and re-measure the room. I'll post here if I can find my old measurements.

FWIW the Dayton SUB1200 and SUB1500 for the money are very good deals, too. For $200 the JBL sub is a decent deal, tho.
