Starting an audio system with an old Onkyo AV receiver.

Hello everyone!

I am planning to start an audio set up and I have an old Onkyo HT-R390/HT-R290 AV receiver which I plan to use as my amplifier.

Will the Klipsch RP-500m reference speakers (or another speaker with the same or smaller specs)work with them? If yes, what would be the disadvantages?

If you have recommendations it will be very welcome.

They will work together but the receiver sounds like it is just something you have laying around. If that is the case at some point you might want to upgrade.

The Klipsch are solid speakers but if I may ask why did you pick them.

Do you have any particular music interests or budget.

Seems that's an avr from the period of time they had hdmi/network board issues; was that already taken care of while Onkyo had the extended warranty going?

Should work fine with those speakers but I have the same questions Leemix does otherwise....

I meant lesser specifications. It will be mainly used for a 20 sqm room.

Yes. I used to connect all my media devices to it via HDMI and it worked fine.

I just had a problem with the unit switching off from time to time and had it fixed but I was too lazy to have it reconnected and had it lying around ever since.

Since its going to be used for a small room (20-25sqm) maybe a lower sensitive speaker would suffice (but im not really sure since im new.)

When it comes to frequency 20h-20khz is ok.

A higher sensitivity speaker can get louder with the same amp power is one consideration, but still depends on your listening levels and the distance you are from the speaker. Klipsch are generally regarded as somewhat higher sensitivity, but they generally overstate the spec by roughly 4dB or so, so keep that in mind if using an spl calculator like this. Klipsch rates your speakers at 48hz-25khz (+/- 3dB) so you'd need a subwoofer with those to get full range of 20hz-20khz. Takes a fairly large and expensive speaker generally to get true 20hz-20khz performance.

Your Onkyo receiver should be fine with the Klipsch speakers, but I'd still be keeping my eyes peeled for a nice deal on a good used receiver upgrade in case a great deal comes along.
