Should my r-820Fs and 600c be set to large or small?

I’m running klipsch R820F towers, premiere 600C for my center and two of the reference 12sw subs and am unsure about if I should have speakers set to small or large. Audyssey of course set the towers and center to large and everything else small. I’ve seen mixed opinions on this and read different articles on the matter but was hoping to get some discussion on it with my specific hardware.

Small with a good margin, basically 99.99% or more of speakers should be set to ‘small’ because the sub(s) will almost always do a better job down low.
That doesnt mean you cant run large for some music if you like that better but by default they should be set to bass management on(small). ‘Small’ and ‘large’ are stupid designations because they just make people feel like they should set large if the speakers are pretty big. So a lot of systems are set up wrong because of this.

What about lfe vs lfe+main?

Main basically just duplicates large speakers then and has no effect with smalls?
If all speakers are set to small most AVRs (afaik) will treat LFE+Main and LFE the same. If the speakers are set to large you get bass sent to the sub and also the speakers that are set to large.(often called double bass)

I'd also say use bass management (small) and experiment with crossover, 80 is a good start but try higher and lower as well. Generally not a fan of the double bass (LFE+Main) myself but experiment with that too. It's your preference in the end that counts....

Audyssey set my crossover to 40 for all speakers but atmos which it sets to 80.

But Audyssey doesn't actually know your Speakers' capabilities. You do. :)

XOs are usually recommended at about 1 octave above the F3 of your Speaker, sometimes you see a rec for 1/2 octave above the F3.

(An octave is a doubling of frequency... so if F3 is 40, 80Hz is an octave.)

The auto setup usually sets the crossover too low and often large also so it wont use the crossover. Manually try 80Hz, maybe test 60Hz also for the main RL and see what you prefer.(and ‘small’ ofc)

(Its the manufacturer who does the small/large and crossover settings, a top Audyssey employee have said that they would prefer it if it was set as a default to ‘small’ with an 80Hz crossover)
