Just saw these monoblocks on online and I think I want them, I don’t know why I want them, maybe to hold my house down in case of a tornado. I think they could be a pair of monoblocks that I could keep for a lifetime and never need to upgrade.

500 watts each at idle. I do live in Colorado so I wouldn’t need to run my heater as much in the winter.

Krell KMA 160 monoblocks.

160 watts at 8 ohms
320 watts at 4 ohms
640 watts at 2 ohms
1280 watts at 1 ohms

$2,200 plus shipping… anyone care to talk me off the ledge for any good reason?

Hey if you think you need 'em for your speakers and listening levels, get 'em. $2200 for both or each? I'd think about class D to save on the heat in the summer, tho.

If you do buy them. Better have a dedicated 20amp outlet for each one.

I’ve tossed around the idea of getting some Quads in the future, guessing these amps could handle it.

Yeah but I could buy some proamps for that with warranty that could do so.....I don't think Krell would be much different IME in any case....just not an ampli-phile.

Meh two boxes doing the job of one isn't particularly attractive to me (let alone room heaters)....YMMV I like what Douglas Self once said about necessary crosstalk spec in a two ch amp to ever justify monoblocks.

I’ve owned a few krell amps. Love the sound of them. And yes the class A will eat a hole in your wallet. But the sound from them was nothing short of incredible. I used them on Klipsch and JBL speakers and never really had to turn the knob up for some really high spl and the sound was so clear and would bring out sounds that I did not know was in the recordings. But remember this. Krell is know for needing the power caps change out every 10 to 15 years. Maybe with the newer caps more life can be had, but I think with all the heat and high idle of power with just having them on shortens the life of the Capacity’s from the power

Oooh an amplifile that can easily tell what amp is driving his speakers....true golden ears is so rare.

I hear it often repeated (not around here) that, “you want an amp that doubles in power as the ohms are halved…”.
Is there any truth in that statement in general? I know it could matter in relation to a specific speaker such as an electrostat that dips close to one ohm but does it matter if you have a relatively well behaved speaker?

It's a good ideal for amp output but usually if you look at the specs you won't see it exactly happening at the same THD/SINAD either....

So maybe those amps belong in an old English castle. I like stuff with some nostalgia but those are overkill and would kill my breaker panel.

I did a little googlefu after posting last night and apparently all amps double in power as the ohms are halved to a point in output but few do it at full output. I guess it’s important if you buy an uber expensive 50 watt amp with a massive power supply and huge caps. You may actually use the whole amp and you don’t want massive distortion when you do. I seldom listen over mid 70’s db, I need to stay in my own lane. In my defense I did start last night with gin and tonics and finished it with tequila. Perhaps I should keep my foolish spending in the liquor cabinet where it belongs.

Another trick is to very conservatively state the 8 ohm figures so you can "show off" the 4 ohm spec Always nice to have good low impedance capabilities, tho likely not needed particularly with many speakers....especially at fairly low listening levels . Only 50wpc? Why?
