Should Home Theater Embrace Gaming to Save the Industry?

What?? The gamers I know (including myself) care very much about video quality! I bought my first HDTV because I got a Xbox 360. It was the first device that did anything in HD for me and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. Most of my tv buying decisions since then were centered around gaming so I can see what's on screen better. Larger displays, better refresh rates, color depth, accuracy and high definition mean a lot to us gamers!

Why is it that most gamers prefer LG OLED over Sony OLED while Sony OLED has consistently displayed better image quality than LG? If given the choice, most gamers would choose an LG OLED over Sony due to LG OLED typically being better than Sony when it comes to gaming and gaming features. Whereas the purist videophile or cinephile will place a premium on image quality which Sony OLED rates higher than LG, with superior motion handling, better upscaling and overall more accurate picture.

If you could get your hands on a new console, you could pair it with a 77" LG CX right now for the price of a Sony A80J by itself. Not a bad deal and in no way a bad picture. Results will vary when combining different pieces of hardware of course and nobody has put out the "perfect" anything.

I hear you @Auditor55, but if players like the ones put out by Oppo disappear altogether, some may have to turn to consoles as an option. Why anybody from Apple, Microsoft and Sony didn't get onboard to bitstream EVERYTHING from the get go is mind boggling to me though. While consoles improved audio performance because of home theater audio improvements, TVs improved in video quality and capability in no small way because of gaming and you cannot blame manufactures for wanting to sell more TVs. The best OLED models for gaming are hardly throw away products. If receiver manufacturers can ever get a handle on HDMI 2.1 inputs and output, gamers would not need more than one HDMI input on the TV for the receiver and they would not be forced to use ARC/eARC or optical outputs to get sound to the receiver. I think it's a little much to blame millennials when far too many boomers are still tuning into standard def channels when watching on 4K TVs and using all channel stereo mode on their receivers.

HDMI 2.1 doesn't enhance audio quality, it's there for gaming purposes and doesn't do anything to enhance the audio or HT experience. HDMI 2.1 would probably work for the 8K projector market, which doesn't really exist.

Gamers upgrade OLED TVs like they do iPhones. That's why I said OLEDs are throw-away TVs.

LG is cheaper, Sony is pricey, kind of have to wait for Black Friday to get a good deal, but if you already have a TV you can wait.

I wouldn’t call trading up for upgrades “throwing away”. No, HDMI 2.1 does not improve audio, but not having it available for video forces some to compromise audio performance when connecting a console directly to a TV. Improvements to TVs for gaming is not hurting home theater. The debacle that is HDMI 2.1 implementation in receivers is the current issue and it won’t be fixed amongst all makes for some time. But, that’s a gamer’s problem.

First of all, that's just an assertion. Unless you have data from polls or something..? Personally I'd be very happy with either one! Besides, even if it were true that some gamers may prefer one over another has nothing to do with the big picture. Seems like a pretty big leap to go from that to "gamers are ruining the industry" don'tcha think?? We all want better performance.

I'm leaning toward an A80J myself and waiting for a price reduction. I'm not interested in top notch gaming support but rather like the remote control and simple stand. Weight is a factor and the LG stand is heavy and I will not be mounting it on a wall. Also, the damn thing supports DTS! I'm not buying anything that does not if I can help it. I don't want it to disappear forever.

When I say ruin, I believe the quality will go down as manufacturers try to please the gaming market. This can be observed in the TV market, with lots of poor quality TVs out there as manufacturers try to add gaming features.

Back to the topic at hand, I'd say home theater kinda' already embraced gaming but just had a big issue with implementation of HDMI 2.1. It'll get worked out. Worse things have happened to manufacturers' products over the years and have improved. Besides, the current consoles are first gen tanks and the next models will have new receivers to play with and may actually fit in a cabinet.

What in the market data tells you it's mostly gamers buying poorer quality tv's and not other factors? You know, like PRICE?

Options. If somebody is connecting directly to the TV and using ARC/eARC, they will lose a DTS track from the source if it is not a supported codec. I actually like the way my Samsung TV can convert PCM or dolby tracks and output them in DTS 5.1 using DTS Neo 2.5. They don't do it anymore. But, that's just one thing wrong with new Samsung TVs.

This was my second post in this thread, and it's not far off from my first one.

It's not all about the audio. I think that part of it really is pretty good. I feel like more focus on the video side, like refresh rates and lag that gamers wanna see. Dump all of the smart features and put the r&d dollars into performance.

I, an avid gamer advocating for fewer features and better performance. Even before you posted anything.

No! It's irrelevant! Just because tv manufacturers are advertising gaming friendly features has nothing to do with gamers driving the market into ruin!

Are you saying there has been a decline in pq in the last decade "because gamers"? It seems to me that pq steadily increases as science uncovers better tech. Isn't pq better today than it was ten years ago?

Got any more red herrings? Oh, and plasma doesn't count. Those were phased out because of environmental reasons.

I was referring to an externally connected device playing DTS content but it would apply to Smart apps and anything being sent in DTS. Though, I can't think of an app that has DTS as a supported codec. It's all about Dolby. You wanna talk about ruining home theater? "It supports dolby and pays the price or it gets the hose!"
