5.2.4 or 7.2.2 Atmos Setup with sofa on back wall?

Hello,

I am working out an atmos setup for my room. I have a sectional sofa up against the back wall. I have no room to really create any space by moving it forward nor do I have any wall space on the back wall to install in-wall speakers. My question is whether I should do a 5.2.4 Atmos setup with 4 in-ceiling speakers as shown in the diagram. Or I could maybe move the couch away from the wall about 6" and place a pair of bookshelf speakers down and behind the couch firing upwards to use as rear surrounds. Then add two atmos in-ceiling speakers as depicted in the second diagram.

What would be your suggestions?

Thanks!

That space is not conducive to either setup you're asking about. At the most, with your couch against the wall (or even with 6" clearance), you should be looking at 5.2.2. Dolby has some handy dandy guides to show you where to place speakers for whatever setup you're using:

As much as I advocate for .4 Atmos, I agree.

I would NEVER try for a 7ch bed layer with a couch against the wall. It’s more of a distraction than an immersion. And sometimes less is more. At best, imo move the couch as FR forward as you can and then try for 5.x.4. Or .2.
