Denon 4500 take over?

Looking for an explanation.
watching my Samsung UN65NU800D this morning and I grab the tv remote, press the info button. One of the options is Home Theater, I press the HT button and the menu for the Denon 4500 pops on screeen and reads: Source:DVD, Input:HDMI, Sound:Dolby Audio.

the screen then shows the Denon logo. I take the Denon remote and select cable tv. It is hands down the best picture and sound we have had for Directv. premium channels default to letterbox and playing at 4K.

is it possible that when I selected HT on the tv remote, the tv sent the signal to the Denon, and the Denon decided that the best picture and sound combo would be to use the DVD to process the picture and sound?

Thanks.

Sounds like you hit the Home button and Home Theater was an option in your Sources tile. The Denon would be the source as it is connected to the TV via HDMI. What are the devices hooked up to the Denon and what inputs are you using for each of them? Is anything other than the Denon hooked up directly to the TV?

On my Denon info gets you just that....info, no selection of anything from there, just a display of the source/sound mode/volume. Even if I press the options button on the remote there's limited choices available for that particular input. Now what your tv remote does, or shares codes with your avr, dunno. Don't know what your settings were before either....

I pressed what Samsung calls the multi color button on the remote

I get this menu from the tv.

The highlighted button says “home theater put”
when I press that button I get this:

I then pressed CABL/SAT button on the Denon remote

This is where it all changed , for the better.
I am getting 4k on more channels. Sound and pic improved.

Got it, info panel a bit different than mine, though now I have more questions. Can't quite make out the highlighted selection in the pic. Before switching to CBL/SAT, the Denon was on the DVD input. Curious how you were getting the Directv info to the TV if it is connected to the Denon and the Denon was set to another input. So, is everything connected to the Denon and just the Denon output to the TV? Is Directv connected to the TV with coaxial cable and also to the Denon with HDMI cable? That would explain the change in quality if you switched to the Denon connected HDMI input.

Yes and yes! It is like I purchased a new tv!

The wife wanted me to put an 82” to replace this 65”, and install the 65” in another room. After today, I might just buy her another 65”.

Looking at the Denon remote control app, I can see that the input is 1080 and output is 4K.

How do I make this the default setting? Right now, the only way to get back to that setup is via the Quick Select setting.

It looks like the Denon is set to upscale and not just pass the video signal to the TV. The Directv box may be set to 1080p to avoid glitches when changing channels of different resolutions. You can play around with the settings to see what you think looks the best. TVs are the best at upscaling so many set everything to AUTO in their receivers and devices. I have my TiVo outputting 1080p for everything and the receiver passes it through to the TV without upscaling it. Check pages 203-204 of the Denon manual for the video output settings.PDF Download
