I just wanted to wish Phil the best of luck tomorrow.. When he was a freshman at ASU i first saw him play.. Just enough to know he was better than most everybody else.. We were playing thru a group of ASU players playing at our course.. He hit one of those flop shots over a bunker to a short pin, the type only PHIL could hit... We were a group of high end amateur's and mini tour players.. As soon as we finished out the hole and moved on there was this recognition we saw a future great " back when" .. And here he is doing it again at 50....

Mickelson... I guess you don't know much about golf??
Some, just rarely think about it. Really don't find it very interesting as a player but then I have more interesting activities like mountain biking. I somewhat now remember your involvement tho. My grandpa was a significant guy in golf, but personally just don't care for it much myself. Let alone associate it with the usual university sports....

Fair enough. .. Yeah I have a semi notable history in the game.. Phil is leading the PGA with one day to go..he has a chance to become the first 50 year old to win a major.. Pretty epic stuff if it's a thing that registers on your radar..

Does age matter that much in golf, tho? It's not like it's an aerobic exercise by any means.

Yeah, the fact nobody's ever done it attests to that .. It's about nerves and eyesight and flexibility and strength ...ya gotta have played against great athletes to get the whole thing .. That's one thing i have going for me.. I've had my ass handed to me by enough world class players to get how good you gotta be.. It ain't like selling insurance.. it takes actual talent that extends beyond the gift of bullsiit or kissing butt...

I've just noticed many older players success vs other sports for the most part. It's just not as physically demanding but still is too.

That's the thing , from a distance golf looks easy , mostly because every guy with enough money to play can pretend they play the same game as these guys.. Trust me it ain't beer thirty on the 12 th tee.. It's real.. It's hard and it's every bit the mental grind of any sport...

Oh, I've played, just not my sport to get interested in getting better at. Not particularly enthused about the land use either. Just don't "get it" mostly. Did have a champion try to get me into it at one point thru my grandpa...and his various country clubs where golfing and his businesses did well....when I got into the business world few in my arena played golf and those that did were usually not worthy....

I used to golf a couple times a week. Especially in the summer when prices are cut in half out here. I've also golfed quite a few times when it was 115° outsideoutside and it was brutal. If it weren't for the igloo coolers full of ice water at every tee box we wouldn't have been able to make it through the whole course. We'd dump straight up ice water over our heads at every hole.

My god we used to drink a lot of beer over 18 holes too. We'd smuggle in a couple of 18 packs hidden in our golf bags.

Oldest player to win a major by quite a few years. This will go down as his legacy with his 6 majors. Congrats Phil.

It's amazing to me that Phil was able to beat younger guys like Brooks Koepka (albeit inured) and Bryson DeChambeau.

A few years ago I took some lessons from a guy who had played on the PGA tour for several years. I was plenty humble about my game going in, but I was even more humble afterwards.

It takes a lot of work and talent to get good enough to have a legit chance to make a decent living as a player ...guys that think they can play a little because they've broken 80 a few times could get a stroke a hole from a tour player and it wouldn't be enough.. i played with Kenny Perry back in the early 90s , dude never made a putt all day and dropped a 68... Another time i was playing with John Davis who at the time was about the top college player in the country( he played at Grand Canyon University).. i birdied the 6th and 7 th holes to get to 1 under... Then i remembered he was 5 under after 7 with a bogey.. That was a bit humbling...

Remember that day it was 122 f ??? (Back in about 1991).. I was playing in a skins game at Gainey Ranch and shooting about an 80 .. Kind of a bad memory...

I think this may elevate him to even with T Watson in the rankings of " best golfer ever not named Tiger or Jack..."

Sounds like how we played when I lived in west TX. Too damn hot outside. We had at least 25 mph winds that made things extra fun.

Needless to say I never got very good at golf.

Tom Watson ALMOST won the British Open at age 59. Now that would have been one for the ages. :)
