hi all,

so I just bought a new amp, and it has a very slight hum when I put my ear right up to it, just wondering if this is normal, as on my previous amp there was none...that I remember ever hearing anyway. do amplifiers just in general hum a bit depending on the unit and is there anything I should be worried about, like will it damage the unit? [ theres no sound or buzzing coming from the speakers, just a very slight hum from the amp itself.

thanks

That is very common. It is coming from the power transformer and nothing to worry about.

Well I never noticed it before, but yes. If I put my ear right up against it I can hear the hum. But since I never put my ear against my amp I s'pose I can live with it, lol.

What were you doing with your ear on the amp??

Oh you know just a hobby, listening to amps ;)
Lol I was just hooking it all up, had to squeeze in over top of it.

Big transformers in them, it won't be normal if they don't hum lol.. Even if the hum is audible from a couple feet is normal, again, considering the size and the fact that there are two of them in it. Some people are more/super sensitive to the 50, 60, 100, 120 Hz too, I am anyway.

i had the same problem but mine was louder it was frustrating. the cause was a heat that was back feeding a sine wave that makes the transformer hum louder. i unplugged the heater and it went away.

The hum is basically noise in the electrical line.

I have an Outlaw 7100 that had a transformer hum from when I bought it in 2003. I bought a Monolith M7X a few years ago to replace it, and when installed in the same location, the 7X was silent.

I moved recently, and while the 7X has been almost quiet, I did catch a hum one time.

Point being some amps are more prone to hum than others, and it may not be consistent.

The fix if it bothers you is https://avahifi.com/products/humdinger-dc-line-blocker

This completly eliminated the noise on the Outlaw. I ordered another one for the Monolith but haven't hooked it up yet as the hum went away on its own.

He was proving that all amps, actually, do not sound the same. :D
