Audyssey, what does it really do?

Let me put it this way...

If I tell Audyssey to only apply adjustments beneath a certain frequency, i.e. 300Hz, what does it do exactly to make adjustments, are they pure EQ/PEQ adjustments?
Is it doing anything I wouldn't be able to do with PEQ adjustments in another device?

I've heard people talk about room modes, standing waves etc, but standing waves - aren't they just those peaks (positive gains) in the frequency respone, pre-calibration?

About room modes, what is it exactly, and what does Audyssey do to combat them, that a standalone device with PEQ adjustments couldn't do?

Thank you!

They're FIR filters actually....try this thread https://forums.audioholics.com/forums/threads/audyssey-app-vs-parametric-equalizer.120977/ and maybe this interview with Chris K of Audyssey https://www.audioholics.com/room-acoustics/audyssey-room-eq-interview

Some info from Audyssey

Wow, excellent read, thank you very much, super-informative!

Very much better than conventional PEQ, indeed.
Hmm, these choices, lol.

You'd pick an AVR with FIR correction in front of separates with PEQ/IIR?

Well I do have three avrs with Audyssey and use some minidsp units so a bit of both I suppose.....but none can use the Editor app, but I'd like to have that option. Not shopping myself, but next one I'd like to play with is likely to be Audyssey with the app or Dirac (or Trinnov, but that's pretty pricey). PEQ is nice to have, tho.....and the Audyssey equipped avrs generally only have old graphic eq style.

IIR and FIR discussed further here https://www.minidsp.com/applications/dsp-basics/fir-vs-iir-filtering

I am on YouTube looking for Gene’s Audyessy tutorial, no luck. Is it still there? Does anyone have a link? Thanks

I dunno if I remember a video... I think HD already linked it, but here's an interview with Chris K that might be useful. What are you wondering about?

, probably getting ready to mess something up. Looking to limit the roll off to the 500-700 range to see if it makes a difference. Thanks

My Denon AVR-X4200W (2015 year model) does not support the Editor app either but I'm quite hesitant to upgrade just for that functionality when the receiver otherwise is working well for me.

Imo, unless you’re a consummate tweaker, I’d say no. Not worth it. Even though I personally enjoy the functionality, I’m a set n forgot kind of guy. So...

After some initial tweaking I'm also usually "a set n forgot kind of guy", though it would nice to hear what kind of difference there would be by limiting EQ to the lower frequencies in my room.

I just tried it and I may be in the minority here, but I didn't like it. I limited to below 600 hz and it sounds flat and lifeless. What bothers me about that is Audyssey is putting one hell of a boost to my upper frequencies. It's doing a +6 dB boost at 16 kHz... I've measured fr with it set like that and I'm not seeing it on the chart. I dunno wtf is going on...

Huh that IS weird. I’ve tried below 300, and have been using LR bypass for a while now. Toys ya know... lol

Yes, I wouldn't upgrade for that alone....maybe when I finally get convinced to go 4k or put speakers in the ceiling....

Interesting but seems you like it eq'g above 600hz....if you have the patience wonder what your experiences would be trying it closer to schroeder, then at various increases of frequency up to the top.....be a pain in the ass, tho.

So.... the one thing you guys have taught me is that I can not trust my ears beyond what I am listening to at the moment. I limited the roll off to 700.
of course I like it now because I read it on the internet!

I think the mains sound better, brought the lead vocals out more, I always thought the mids were the sweetest sound on the JBL’s..

the surrounds seem to blend much better, to the point that I sometimes questioned if they were being fed information, but when they come in they are there!

TRELL, my goal in life is to have a system set and just enjoy the show. Sadly, if you gave me an am radio with a tone button I would tweak it! I am not proud of that, I know I need help.

I know at some point I am going to have to get REW and a mic to really get the most of of the room and the gear.

or post Covid I can fly one of you out to Cali calibrate everything!

My friend, if you few me out to Cali, I’m afraid you’d be stuck with a new house mate. Or a squatter, depending on semantics lol.

I've got a UHD LG OLED recently but I'm still rocking my old Oppo BDP-93EU, for now at least, and currently my UHD watching is through the LG internal apps. No eARC for my Denon so only DD+ is available.

I think that with the layout of living room it might not be that much a deal with speakers in the ceiling, especially as I'm still negotiating over putting some bass traps there :)

You have streaming (I assume since its the tv) you can get more than DD+ with? I do have one UHD device, my Oppo 203 but didn't get it for that....

My Denon have only ARC and not eARC so that is not possible, though I'm unsure how much of the currently offered streaming has better quality than DD+. For sure only a small part of the library is UHD, not to talk about DolbyVision or HDR.

On Netflix I see that DolbyVision streaming is about 15 Mbs while ordinary HD1080 is about 5 Mbs. A BluRay HD movie can easily be over 35 Mbs, sound included.
