Hi friends!
I have a question, so a friend just posted a queen sized mattress online for free in my area. Can such things help with acoustic treatment in a rented house? If so, how to make good use of it? I'll snap it if it can make good material for my bedroom's acoustic treatment.
Thanks!
David

Acoustic foams, and the foams common to foam mattresses, including memory foam, are not the same.
While I suspect, if applied smartly (i.e. with some basic understanding of Acoustic Principles and Absorption, one may be able to attenuate some frequencies to some degree, but to what extent?)
Too many people go willy-nilly into treating their rooms with little to no understanding of what they are doing. Most don't realize the harm they are doing until much later. I've seen many posts in various fora now where people have discarded most of their room treatments to the betterment of SQ.
Learn about Acoustics first, if you want to do yourself any favors.

Hmm, so are you guys saying that it might not be a good idea to get this free mattress?

If you want to be saddled with a heavy queen size mattress, it's your choice.
When I think of free things I wouldn't want...
Car batteries (used), herpes, queen mattress (used). Yup. All top of my list. :p

But seriously... if you are interested at all in acoustics, then learn about it! You don't need to be an expert, and Physics degrees are not required. Yet a rudimentary understanding will help you take an audio hobby to the next level. The best upgrades most people can do for their systems are the free ones that involve proper set up understanding how soundwaves interact with their room!

Is it a better mattress than your current one? Take the blacklight with you for mattress inspection in any case :)

Remember, it's his friends' mattress....he knows what he's getting into....probably.

I don't know what's creepier: the turn this thread took, or Shirley Temple?
  :p

Gik Acoustics and RealTraps have online information about treatments as well. GIK Acoustics has a youtube channel as well: https://www.youtube.com/user/GlennKuras/
