When do you start feeling radio signals?

Hi there!

I have just recently been getting interested in the whole EMF spectrum of late but something suddenly made me curious.

How strong does a radio frequency has to be in megahertz for you to feel it?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Whenever I start to "feel" radio signals, I just don my cone-shaped, aluminum foil hat.

My Dad was a ham radio guy and when he was On The Air with a few kWs, our rabbit ear CRT TV would show it.

FYI: Radio signal strength is measured in watts, not mega hertz (aka the signals carrier frequency).

You start to feel them when you're really high, man!

High power, low frequency, being very close- that's when you feel it and when you do, it's probably too late to do anything about it because it means the person is being cooked, literally.

My old CRT computer monitor used to go nuts if my phone was near it when a call came in.

And they say the signal from a phone isn't strong.

It's not. CRT's were just very prone to interference! CRT's use an electron gun, which in physics terms is a very low energy particle accelerator, which would accelerate the electrons to about 1/3 the speed of light. Electrons are so light that it is very easy to move them at that speed, even with relatively small EMF fields. Remember when speakers had to be magnetically shielded so they didn't effect TV's?

I know that but the voltage in a CRT is much higher than the energy from a cell phone. The tube is coated and that should provide some shielding, but it really can't shield from the face, which is where my phone was located.

Shielded speakers prevented weird colors in some areas- you may have been surprised if you had seen the display shaking and gyrating.

Nobody on an E-8 JSTARS or E-3 AWACS have ever complained about “feeling” EM radiation so you’re probably good unless you put your head in a microwave. Actually AEGIS can cook a seagull medium rare at 1/4 mile or better. They shutdown many EW equipment within a few miles of the coast so everyone does have to go to Bestbuy and get all new electronics. Over in the sandbox a few years ago we had a problem with Predator drones falling out of the sky, apparently some of the newer equipment on MRAPS doesn’t play well with, well anything electronic.

The voltage doesn't mean much really. It's very low energy in terms of particle speeds. I can't find an exact figure, but probably a couple of MeV/c. At that level you can steer electrons with a handheld magnet. It really doesn't take much.

If we're talking older home wireless phones they used somewhere in the range of 3-5 watts/hr of energy.

My high school Chemistry teacher said that he was stationed on a sub when he was in the Navy- told us about a radio repairman who was on an antenna when someone powered it up. Didn't last long after that- maybe a few hours of agony.

IIRC, it was either my Nokia or Motorola Razr (a real POS) phone- that monitor is long gone.

Ehh, it's similar, cell phones are typically outputting less than 3 watts in use. It just occurred to me as well, that the voltage you're referring to is what accelerates the electrons in the electron gun, once they're out in the tube itself there shouldn't be an applied voltage to the electrons.

Well, it has to do with proximity, too.

Speaking of conspiracy theories, have you seen this?

The Navy uses a lot of ULF that gets shut down way out to sea, it’ll reprogram pacemakers

Hell, a microwave oven will mess up a pacemaker. My mom and her sister used to joke about who would by a nuker for their step-mother after her pacemaker was installed. They took care of her, but she didn't deserve it.

You need to sit on a microwave oven to mess with a pacemaker, the Navy ULF stuff has just a bit more range. My daughters boyfriend flies drones, half their equipment they aren’t allowed to turn on in the US. The one that everyone should be worried about is the EW officer on a B52, he can make popcorn across half a city if he’s not careful
