This morning I powered on my system as I do every morning to listen to iTunes music from PC and no sound. Some quick investigation indicated my Sony TA-E9000ES Pre-Pro was not outputting to power amp. The unit's power on indictor was glowing, as well as LED display; but, all sources were silent: tape, phono, CD, etc. After about a hour however I heard 3 or 4 pops from my speakers and then output from the Pre-Pro as normal. Now, I am wondering if the silence might have something to do with temperature? That would suggest perhaps a depleted cap, right? At any rate, the unit is now working but I'm hesitant to turn it off. An idea what's going on here?

Sorry to hear that. Hope it won't be a big deal.

Not that I want you to beat the crap out of it, but if it happens again, try slapping the side. Seriously- if you hear any sound from slapping it, you may have a bad solder joint or dirty connector. IIRC, the volume control can turn endlessly in either direction- if it has limits, it may need to be cleaned but I only saw those in stores- never sold or used one. I did consider buying the combo of the same preamp and the power amp with the meters, though.

I took a chance and turned the system off. Waited 30 seconds and turned it back on and so far all is well. I absolutely agree with your solder diagnosis . I also suspect digital input switching board might not have acquired my selected input or any input, snd/or could not read optical/coax/auto/analog instructions. That might have caused the multiple initial pops when the Pre/Pro finally fired up.

Seems like my Denon AVP-A1HDCI pre-pro.

It started out losing sound output. And improved with HEAT. It would take about an hour or more to get to normal sound output. I didn’t hear any popping sounds, though. But I basically had to remember to turn on the Pre-pro a few hours before I used my HT room. As long as the Denon was hot, I could turn it off for a few minutes. But if the temp went cool again, sound output was low again.

I started a thread about it.

Eventually it died.

So you might want to plan your new replacement Pre-pro.

Thanks for commenting. I will keep an eye out for good deals on the second tier Marantz Pre-pro.
