But the Prime's not so good?
They are good but I'd rather have the Ascend 340's as mentioned 6 pages ago. Post #5

But I thought you said you wanted a "quality" 3.1? Quality but no Budget increase. Hmmmm

Fair enough. I was under the impression that the Prime series was decent (very good) quality. But I understand the response.

The SVS Ultra bookshelf speakers are one of the Best at $1000
For some reason I thought the Ultra was a $1000 each. That's for the pair --- a little more acceptable. On the surface, that are the same size and look identical, what is on the inside that makes them worth twice the amount? Both are a consideration. I like the local availability.

While my SVS speakers are older (MBS-02) they're closer to the Ultra I'd think. But looking at the spec between Ultra Bookshelf and Prime Satellite the first difference is the marketing of the name obviously :)
Ultra is 15 x 8.5 x 10.9 inches, weighs 19 lbs, uses a 1" aluminum dome tweeter, a 6.5" mid-woofer, and spec'd 45hz-32khz +/- 3dB, with 87dB sensitivity
Prime is 8.85 x 4.9 x 6.3 inches, weighs 6.5 lbs, uses a 1" aluminum dome tweeter, a 4.5" mid-woofer, and spec'd 69hz-25khz +/- 3dB, with 85dB sensitivity

So they're not all that similar really....

I think you are looking at the surrounds? They have Prime bookshelf speakers that are 13" tall.

I read one review that rated them well, but felt that the treble was a little to bright and forward ---- should I be concerned with that in a garage shop, highly reflective? I lean toward a richer warm sound more so then extremely bright treble.

Redoing my comparo:

Ultra is 15 x 8.5 x 10.9 inches, weighs 19 lbs, uses a 1" aluminum dome tweeter, a 6.5" mid-woofer, and spec'd 45hz-32khz +/- 3dB, with 87dB sensitivity
Prime is 13.3 x 8 x 10.3 inches, weighs 15.5 lbs, uses a 1" aluminum dome tweeter, a 6.5" mid-woofer, and spec'd 48hz-25khz +/- 3dB with 87 dB sensitivity

I see the mid-woofers have different cone material...not sure what the differences in drivers/box are particularly....plus the finish is nicer on the Ultra.

I'd look at measurements rather than going with a bright/forward description particularly myself...hard to know what the conditions of the subjective review was too.

Decision made. I'm ordering the SVS Ultra Bookshelf, same day delivery from local vendor. Great no questions asked return policy if unhappy. So paired with the PB-2000 Pro sub, I think I'll have a good foundation to grow from as needed. I will likely add the Ultra surround speakers later, IF I feel the 3.1 needs a little more octane. ;-)

I'll have them today. :)

hey 'shoe' luv your garage and your '56(from what I can see of it) !

My garage sound system is minor league compared to yours , an old Sherwood receiver, cassette deck, CD player and a couple of NHT speakers ! We can share our love of the 'tri-fives' though ..............

Sweet double nickle! I've had my 56 for 23 years and it's a 10 footer at best. But that's okay, it's in better shape than I am. HA! Haven't touched it in several years due to health issues and a divorce, but honestly, I would love to flip it for something new and more exciting, but that's not likely to happen. SOOOOO, I'll be back at it soon, something other than finishing up the wiring I jump-started a couple weeks ago.

My SVS bookshelf speakers will be sitting on an 8' bench, flaking each end and roughly 5" from the rear wall, what will be the impact on sound quality? I don't have a choice, but curious.

If you fart in the room that will disrupt sound waves also but until it happens why worry about it the same as 5 inch from the wall if that's the only place why worry about it start enjoying your stuff

The question was more educational, seeking education. I'm not worried. But thanks for the feedback.

The best thing you could do is play with them when you get them You try and pull them out as far as you can put them up as close to the wall as you can and see what you think of the sound. They do have a rear port but it is a smaller Port not a large port.

I wouldn't expect the hsu to sound "far richer" but they are a tad hot in the treble directly on-axis. The review I linked went into some detail on the matter.

Skip that Klipsch. The only speaker they make that's remotely in the same ballpark as the Hsu or Ascend is their thx 650, and those are expensive.
I have the Hsu CCB-8s. Yes, they're bright on-axis, but as the Audioholics review and Hsu point out, they're designed to be set up with EXTREME toe-in, listened to 15-deg off-axis, crossing 3-4 ft in front of the MLP. When set up properly and on the 36"-stand height that Hsu recommends they're neutral; I experience no listening fatigue. But more important, they're designed this way to exploit time-intensity trading. They create a huge sweet spot, where people sitting off-center of the MLP still hear a stable stereo image/phantom center locked between L/R; the image doesn't collapse to the speaker nearest them. In my room the sweet spot is 7-8 ft wide. Quite addictive. They image and soundstage spectacularly--wide, deep, and high. I'm driving them full-range in 2.1 with my 21-yr old Bryston 4B-ST (yeah, maybe overkill, but there's no reason to replace this reliable, neutral amp), and they'll play really loud without distortion in my 19.5x15x8 room.
