The Sansui is junk, that Marantz was a dog, the Pioneer SX 580 was a low end unit. That leaves the Pioneer SX 838 as the only possible. However you can not update and only restore.

Collecting these items is really akin to restoring old cars. More for show rather than use. The biggest problem now is that audio and video has become integrated, so those receivers are really only practical in audio only systems.

You should have told us that first. If the 838 is in good cosmetic shape do not put in the garage! That is potentially a collector piece. The Marantz is also potentially collectible, as it has become known as the Edsel of receivers. So unless they are all in rough shape, put the Sansui or the SX580 in the garage.

Do they all function now? What do you mean "need updating"?

A quick scan of the US Audio Market, E-Bay sites for the average market pricing of a working Marantz 2250B runs from $800 up to $1,495.. That average price is about $1,150... Those are significant $, in my opinion before chucking into the dumpster contact me and I will gladly arrange to take it off your hands... :)

Just my $0.02... ;)

the 2 pioneer one channel doesnt work{ can hear very faintly} the marrantz volume is stuck at half volume, dont know about the rest of that one. the sansui works nice. the other pioneer one channel on all the three{ a,b,c] no sound{ very faint]. My daughter likes the old suff, has turntable wants to play lps. doesnt need the radio part of the reciever. So, do i have the old ones refurbished, sell them all and get just an amp so she can listen to lps???????

Old equipment, especially if it hasn't been used for a long time, develops these problems and it's often just a matter of cleaning the controls and switches. Start there and if they work, great- if not, find out why. Controls and switches that haven't moved for years oxidize and collect stuff from the air that prevents good contact.

I could only guess at the number of people who came into the stereo shop where I worked, telling us that they thought they blew up their amplifier and often, it was a Tape Monitor switch that was dirty. Move all of the controls and press all of the switches repeatedly- you'll probably hear scratchy sound and crackling, but that's normal when they're dirty. Make sure the volume control isn't cranked.

Deoxit is a popular brand of electronics cleaner, especially used in addition to just working the controls.

That's what I use- also known as Caig De-Oxit. They have several formulations, for different types of controls. It's not a "One size fits all".

Yep should have mentioned that, believe I linked up an appropriate product to utilize, tho.

Any 70's receiver can indeed be updated, simply by connecting an Airport Express to it, which permits wireless Apple Music streaming pleasures from PC's and smartphones. Just connect it to your router/modem and to your receiver's AUX stereo input.

Curious, the repair shop actually tested them specifically and that was their resulting diagnosis or that was their opinion on what was likely needed?

the three pioneers have all been used at my wifes dance studio for years, they foget to turn the volume too zero then turn it back on the next day and invariably on channel quits working[ turn volume way up on theat side and just very faint in back ground] would take it in and my service guy would [ reset something ] and it would work fine till the next time they didnt turn it down. that service guy retired and the new place it took them too said they need refurbished [ updated] and that wont happen again. roughly 250$ per reciever. so do i sell the 2 like pioneers and may be on of the others so pay for the work on the other 2[ sansui works fine] or sell all and buy new??

Can't answer that question for you. Personally I'd take advantage of the silly prices people will pay for a refurbed receiver from this era as some have pointed out....then use the proceeds to get something more modern/useful in general.....I got rid of my old 2ch receivers a long time ago (but still have some of my old 2ch separates).

I'm not you, though, and the old gear may work great for your stated purposes for a reasonable repair fee. I was more curious if they did a specific analysis to come up with that advice/price.....and not long ago I had one of three similar amps after 35 years of use go up in smoke....and did pay to have the other two gone through by a technician, worth the cost of the analysis (and the almost nothing they needed but a light and a diode), just for peace of mind. That you still have some local technicians is getting to be unusual....

so your saying update all of them and then sell?

If that is something you're interested in doing.....it wouldn't be very interesting to me particularly and I'm not particularly researching the various resale values and I generally don't like dealing with selling stuff too. Maybe just repair the one or two most valuable units in terms of current actual prices being paid, then decide to keep one or both or take advantage of someone willing to pay for the old gear these days and get something more modern/useful.
