I have got a pair of BP9080x for FR and FL, CS9040 for center and a pair of BP8060 for SR and SL to hook up with Yamaha TSR 700. Somehow I am not satisfied with the sound with this setup. Not sure if I am missing something or receiver is not good enough for this setup but sound quality is not good at all. I would really appreciate any expert advice to change the set up or configuration. I am a naive in this segment but I can clearly say that the sound effect is not good at all. Experts! Plz help..

Pictures of your set up would help so we could see it and make recommendations

That AVR is a bit low end for those speakers. What is it that you think is wrong with that sound? Can you be more specific in what you feel is wrong with it?

I wish I could define what exactly the issue is with the sound quality. I had friends over and the moment I played a song and increased the volume, everyone’s first reaction was ‘reduce the volume’ as the sound was not pleasing to the ears.. it was shrilling voice and instead of getting to feel like shaking our legs, we wanted to reduce the volume. I will share the pic of the connection in the morning. I thought I will have to do some changes to the configuration by going into the setup mode of receiver but I really don’t know what to change..

What did you do to set this up? Did you run YPAO? If so, what is the volume dial reading at the time it starts to sound bad?

I didn’t know what was YPAO. I read about it after you asked this question. I will try to use it tomorrow to optimize the setup and will let you know again. Will also check for the dial reading. Thanks for your guidance.

That should help somewhat, at least with basic levels and delays (distance).

How are you setting up/using the powered woofers in the speakers?

Dear All! So here are some additional details which could help you see where I am going wrong. Your inputs are highly appreciated ..

I have been trying to setup this home theater system for almost a month now.As mentioned earlier, I got a pair of BP9080x for FL and FR channels, BP8060st for SR and SL channels, CS9040 for center channel and a pair of in-ceiling CRS6 One speakers and a separate R12SW subwoofer. I don’t know how and if my receiver can provide this much power. I initially installed those in-ceiling speakers for Dolby atoms effect and connected them with receiver but then I got atmos speakers in BP9080 too which are not connected yet. I don’t know which atmos speakers to use and how..

Try running YPAO then report the resulting settings. I'm not up on setup for DT speakers with powered woofers, but you might also try using the powered woofers at least in the L/R speakers (via LFE connection) to help that Klipsch sub out. I have seen threads discussing the pros/cons of using the powered woofers vs not using them, but don't remember the ins/outs of doing so.....you might search for some discussions on that subject. Did DT's speaker manual come with any particular suggestions in that regard?

#1) Those speakers are way to close to the wall. They need separation from the rear wall 2'-4'. Another thing I don't like is the Atmos top speaker.

Using powered woofers those are supposed to be set to Large is I remember correctly.

The height speaker doesn't seem to be connected on the 9080x (I had to look at another picture of a 9080x rear panel to see that)

I will run YPAO today as advised and will let you know. Any feedback on the receiver compatibility. Do you think this receiver can provide enough power for these speakers?

Thanks I will move the speakers away from wall! And yes, I haven’t connected the height speakers yet. Wasn’t sure if I should use height speakers or in-ceiling speakers.

It's not a particularly high powered amp, but will work fine up to a point. Hard to know what levels you'll listen at (but calibrating the avr with YPAO and then reporting back on the volume levels you're using would be some help).....have you tried using an spl calculator to estimate your power needs? http://myhometheater.homestead.com/splcalculator.html.

Update: I used YPAO and it has improved the sound quality a lot. Not sure if I can do any further enhancement. The volume level I was keeping was around -10.0 db. The SPL at listening position comes to around 112.3 when I considering 5 speakers for calculation but I don’t know what is the significance of this number.

A little bit.. moved them atleast 4 inches away from the wall but nothing much.

At reference volume (0) the THX movie level average is 85dB with provision for 20dB peaks is 105dB (plus 10dB for the LFE channel). How does it sound at -10 vs say -20?

I'd move the speakers more than 4 inches away (even temporarily to test) and re-run Ypao after repositioning speakers.

Those front left and right speakers are bipolar, they really need space behind because they send a lot of sound backwards also. They need (much)more room behind than normal speakers.
