My mother in law's Kenwood Stereo Receiver no longer receives input from TT or Tape sources. Just to have it looked at cost $50 so, my mother in law ordered a new Marantz NR-1200 Receiver. It has a Phono input and Tape inputs but no outputs for Tape; however, it does have pre-outs, so I'm wondering if those outputs can be connected to the Tape inputs of the cassette recorder? My guess is all of the ins and outs of the receiver are line level, so I can't contemplate an issue?

I supposed you can use the pre outs as variable line level outputs. Quality wise it won't be as good but you are talking regular tape deck quality anyway so it is immaterial.

How often is she recording other sources onto cassette tapes? If never, she doesn't need the output to the tape deck.

While the preouts would work for that purpose, they're downstream from the volume control, so the signal would be lower than that of an unattenuated "record/out" tape loop output. To get the preouts to the same voltage would require cranking the volume high enough, which would probably preclude actually monitoring the recording with the speakers, as that would also be enough to drive the amp to full power and be screaming loud.

Yes, of course, I guess i will figure something else out I forgot the pre out will be subject to volume control .

She still records mix tapes from the radio or record player?

I don't know how she uses her dual well cassette deck. Looking at the shoe box where she places her tapes it appears she may have been enjoying playlists made for her. She's 96 and I do not think she's recording from tuner section of receiver or from TT. I know she records to cassette via microphone. At any rate, she just advised me that she only had a need to play tapes so I believe the new receiver will work out ok. I know nothing about some of the receiver's capabilities and features but the HEOS I'm hoping will allow her to listen to her tapes in another room from where the receiver will be placed via a wireless active speaker. For now, and until I can digest the operator's manual, she will just expect to pick up where the 30 year old Kenwood dropped out. Thank you for your interest.
