Looks like a good update! That being said, I really liked the look of the original with the Art Deco knobs:

The more I enjoy stereo, the more I find myself moving away from a receiver and using a high quality amp matched with a quality external DAC.

Is the sound quantifiably better, and are there other reason’s?

I placed an order for a Purifi 1ET400A amp and I have a Topping E30 DAC I will try with it. But, what I really want to try is the Purifi 1ET400A amp along with XLR connectors to a GUSTARD DAC-X16.

The measurements for this combo look really good and most of my music is being streamed from my MBP via Audirvana either with AIFF CD rips or via Qobuz. If this sounds as good as it measures it will be my new favorite stereo setup. This configuration will offer over 300W per channel at ultra low distortion and the energy usage and heat will be significantly lower than any receiver I currently own.

That's a good solution if you are only using one source, but the receiver is better if you have a system that uses multiple sources. However, I think that in the future most people will just be using one source like their PC or phone or some streamer.

Most DACs these days offer three inputs and you can switch between them with the remote. But rather than use the CD player I find myself ripping CD's in AIFF so I can use one source (the computer) for all streaming, playing my CD's and Hi-Res purchases. It's so simple that way as Audvirana offers ALL of the content on one screen. Hard to go back to physical media when absolutely everything plays with a simple click from anywhere in the building. Plus, you can build your own playlists from all sources using your favorite music tracks.

I am really disappointed that Outlaw would continue on that path. As an aside, if they think some audiophiles or semi audiophiles would value a 2 ch receiver, why cheap out on DAC? Just a couple dollars more (if not), they could have put a flagship AKM, or ESS DAC in it, that's a real shame imo.

Perhaps not having reliance on AKM right now isn't such a bad thing....

True, but that must have been before. By the way I hope you know my feeling about DAC chips, not that they would make a difference, just what do? Why even bother with such a heavy two channel receiver, why not just get Yamaha or D+M to build one for them (do it quietly under some sort of NDA), but based on their AVR with only two channel amps in it, with a tuner and similar features so they can sell it as an Outlaw and mark up the cost accordingly, that is my point.. I suspect the answer is, marketing knows how semi audiophile/hearsays think and know they can feed on that:D.

I was thinking more in general supply terms for the brand/model down the line. Then again have no idea if this is the end for AKM or can they be back up and running in a reasonable amount of time? I know you follow dac chips and want the best one possible, even though it wouldn't make an audible difference :) The whole 2ch gear thing and audiophiles.....well, there's a lot there :) Seems the RR2150/2160 is a worthwhile item for Outlaw to sell in any case....personally I couldn't see owning one but I'm already well equipped and lean more towards having multich capabilities....

There are so many integrated amps on the market and quality external DACs now. It's hard to differentiate one product from the other unless it has an outstanding feature that shines above the rest.

Marketing is the biggest distinction I think :) If it's truly an integrated amp why in heck does it need an external dac? :)

You can use one or the other. You typically don't add an external DAC unless it offers some new desired feature.

Not sure what real advantages this unit has over something like the Cambridge Audio AXR100 which costs half.

Or the Denon DRA-800H with HDMI video, also half the price.
