Troubleshooting my Home Audio System

Hello,

I was wondering if you folks could give me some advice on troubleshooting an issue.

Each time I turn on my AVR within about two to four seconds after I turn on a movie or start any kind of audio my right front speaker will make a gentle thump. This only happens when I first turn it on the system.

So far I've check the line voltage, everything looks good at the power outlets.
I've checked for loose wires on all the speakers and termination points.

I don't even know if this is a major issue, but I don't want a problem within my AVR to damage my speakers. Any idea what I should try next or what this sounds like?

Current Setup:

AVR: Onkyo TX-NR838
Towers: GoldenEar Triton 2
Center: GoldenEar SuperCenter
Surrounds: GoldenEar SuperSat 3

Is it the avr or the amp for the powered woofer in the speaker?

I honestly don't know for certain... I suppose I could swap the L and R speaker wires for a bit and see if the issue follows the wire or stays at the speaker. That should give us the answer.

Great question! EDIT: It'll take me a while to do this as I'm on a business trip, any other suggestions or ideas I'll do my best to test if anyone has any other points of interest.

Or just unplug the woofer amps....

Ah - in that case, I did that and it didn’t change.

Don't know why it would only affect one channel and not an issue I've had at all with a variety of avrs and various speakers.....

ps Unless the sound is of unusual amplitude I probably wouldn't worry about it, tho it would annoy the hell out of me.

It sounds as if the speaker relay on that right channel is stuck in the closed position.

Most amps have a turn on thump. So there are relays in the speaker circuit controlled by a timer circuit. The relay is open until the turn on thump is over. The timer is designed to close the relays in that speaker circuit until after the turn on thump. If the thump is not loud, I would not worry about it. However the thump is DC offset, so there is a possibility of speaker damage. See how great the woofer cone excursion is with that thump. That will tell you how concerned you need to be.
