How come my receiver does not recognise my surround back speakers?

Ok so I own a Yamamha RXv661 receiver. I have wired my rear speakers correctly as the user manual has shown me. The speakers work perfectly but when I try to activate them on the receiver it says “none” as in theirs nothing connected... I want it to recognise the speakers so I can tune my rear speakers so they’re not so loud and overpowering my front speakers.

They work perfectly but you need to activate them on the receiver? Did you run YPAO?

I lost it because my receiver is quite old... I ordered on online but it’s going to take 2 weeks to get to me. I just want to roughly tune my rear speakers to be a litttle quieter than my front speakers. When I go into speaker level settings, FR BR and LF BR are matching. So if I reduce the sound it reduces all the speakers... I’ve wired everything up correctly as well.

Do you know how to activate them on the receiver cause the setting I’m trying to activate them on is not letting me for some reason.

And when I wire the speakers up to surround mid ports on the back of the receiver I get zero sound out of them, even when I activate them... but when I go to edit the levels of the surround mid speakers I get static to adjust the level. I set the level, go to listen to music or put a movie on and get zero sound

Lost what? What did you order?

What does FR BR and LF BR are matching mean?

You're saying your avr has only universal channel level control? That doesn't sound right....maybe by pairs of speakers rather than individual speaker on lower end models but usually each speaker is adjustable.

I lost the YPAO but I have ordered one which will take a few weeks to come. I’ve wired my front speakers to the front speaker ports on the back of my receiver, I have wired the back speakers on the back ports of my receiver but when I go to adjust the sound, it adjusts both back and from speakers together instead of separately... so I decided to try wiring my rear speakers to the middle ports on the back of my receiver. When I go to adjust the sound I get static to identify how loud the speaker will be but when I go to watch a movie or listen to music, I get no sound whatsoever. All I want to do is reduce the sound of my rear speakers because they are a lot closer to me then my front speakers they sound overpowering.

So you lost the microphone. Hopefully that will resolve it eventually in any case. In the meantime....

Take a picture of the back of your avr showing your connections, I have never heard of a "middle port" for example. Pics of your screen settings would probably help, too.

One thought, if you have a 5.1 system you only have side surrounds, if that is what you mean by middle ports. Not sure why front and rear speakers would be adjusted together, though, let alone why you couldn't go and adjust those sound levels per speaker (or at least channel) if necessary.

I just saw your other post asking how to use ARC. This avr is a new-to-you unit? You might also think about running a factory reset on any used gear....always a good first step.

Unfortunately I can’t upload photos, I tried before but the files are too big apparently. I’ll explain a little better. I have front speaker ports. Then surround sound speaker ports (which I was referring to as middle ports). Then surround back ports. I also have a centre port but I don’t have anything connected. My front speakers and rear speakers are recognising as on and I am unable to adjust my rear speakers separately from my front speakers. Like I said earlier, I wired my rear speakers to the surround sound ports (middle) and I could adjust the sound but whenever I played music or a movie no sound would come out of the speaker.

Did they work before? I know some of those Yamaha receiver will say like 7.2, but 2 channels are on a second zone. So you only get 5.2 really.

not sure if that is the issue. But it can be possible

As a multiple Yamaha AVR(s) owner, I highly recommend 'lovinthehd' recommendation. Do a factory reset on the unit for now, re-run YPAO when you get the mic and tweak it accordingly on the GUI ('graphical user interface' on your TV/monitor) ... or even better, if available, the Web Access Control.

The WEB browser GUI works by typing in the assigned IP address of the AVR into the browser followed by “/Setup/index.html”. RE: http://192.168.1.165/Setup/index.html

And make sure to 'backup' the settings to your PC or MAC after your happy with the results, on the off-chance the settings get scrambled again. It will save you a lot of time and heartache, so you don't have to go thru the whole procedure again.

The avr likely needs to use surrounds before rear surrounds. Reattach the leads to the surround terminals and then check speaker setup and make sure the surrounds are enabled. Why do you use the rear surround terminals? 5.1 only has front L/R/C and surrounds, 7.1 has front L/R/C, surround and rear surrounds.
