Extra Subwoofer for Def Tech BP7004?

I own a pair of 10 yr. old Def Tech BP7004 tower speakers in my home theater setup. I enjoy their overall sound; particularly for music. However, I find that the subs are lacking when it comes to movies. They do not have the chest punch that I am looking for. Would adding a stand alone sub do the job or would that only make things muddier?

Yes, but lean towards a ported sub to get what you are looking for.

I can’t imagine NOT using external subwoofers. Imo, def tech oversold those as “subwoofers” and anyone should use subs with powered towers.

How big is the room? That’s the first step to deciding how big/many to go with.

We need your room dimensions including large openings to other areas and a budget

The room is 17 x 18 with 10 ft. ceiling. I am leaning towards ported. Not sure if one or two are needed. There are large double doors but they will be closed for movie viewing so this would be an enclosed room. Budget is to be determined but I would think the $500-700 range.

You're not going to fill that volume of space with a subwoofer in that budget range IMO

I would also call SVS and ask their recommendations
This is what I was going to recommend.

Correction - the room is 14x18x10
Still large for that budget. A sub has to pressurized the room to hear and Feel the effects. I suggest saving to get right sub. Or
