Upgrade - used equipment or new?

OK, total newbie when it comes to home theatre. I'm currently running a Sony STR-DH720 (main room) with Polk towers, center and sub, along with Denon HTIB rears. I'm looking to purchase a second receiver for my office/man-cave. Wondering if my better option would be to upgrade the Sony in the main room or pickup a cheaper receiver for the office/man-cave. I don't think I can do Atmos at the moment because of our room layout, and I'm sure our landlord doesn't want me mounting speakers everywhere. Thanks in advance!

Your question lacks information like what speakers your planning to use. What speakers you currently have since Polk has multiple series of speakers.

Polk T90E Euro for the fronts, will need to check the center and sub.

What kind of video features will be needed in each room? Are there 4K TVs in the mix? Do you want an AVR with network capabilities?

Personally I would upgrade your current AVR in your main room and use the Sony for your office. Lots of good deals out there for budget AVR's. Denon, Marantz and Yamaha. I think I saw Best Buy has the Denon 2500h for $600 for early black Friday deals. Good time to purchase something like that.

One of the TVs is 4K - the one in my office is ancient and will likely be replaced in the near future. Network capabilities would be nice.

I've seen a lot of Denons and Yamahas for sale - I had an older Yamaha and I wish I'd kept it.

Why would he upgrade his AVR with the speaker's he has?
The Logical upgrade is speakers first

He didn't mention anything about upgrading his speakers. Just specifically asked about AVR's.

I'd consider upgrading the speakers but need an AVR anyway at least for my office. I have a 30 year old Denon in there now. I need speakers for that room anyway.

What is your budget? You may find you can afford speakers and an AVR for the main room and transfer your current setup to the other room.

Around $500 or so which I realize likely puts me into used rather than new.

2 fronts, center and a sub

Even in the used Market you are going to have a very very hard time achieving this unless you purchase absolute junk

For the office here ya go

Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 (Call and purchase 3 L/C/R)

Dayton Audio 1200 sub

Or if you're handy and have a little time

"Well, Yamaha's TSR-700 is $399.99 at Costco," he said as laughter erupted from the crowd. "Hey! shut up back there! These guys, you gotta' love em'."

Never thought of buying one at Costco. Not sure how it would hold vs a more expensive unit...

What more expensive units would you compare it to, tho, and in what way? FWIW it's apparently the Costco version of the new RX-V6A listing for $600 by a few reports....

"Well, I haven't blown mine yet," he said as more laughter filled the room. He turned and yelled, "Seriously guys, I'm talkin here!" Assuming it is a Smart 4K TV, can you not get the new speakers and then stream audio to your current receiver using ARC or an optical cable? That would get you network features and not break the bank.

The Yamaha TSR-700 is the Costco exclusive version of the Yamaha RX-V6A and is priced at $399.99. It has an identical feature set and look save for the model number.
