ONKYO faulty HDMI board question

My receiver hasn't been displaying any menu and gave me blue screen a couple of days ago so I sent it to onkyo service center.

They called me yesterday and they confirmed what I felt, the hdmi board is faulty and needs to be replaced. But they don't have stock of the NR686 HDMI board so they offered to install the HDMI board for the NR676 instead and they claim there is no difference between the two except the name of the Bluetooth connection.

I told them to hold off until I do some research and see if that's feasible. Does anyone have any idea that what they are claiming is right? Or should I wait two months until the 686 part gets shipped to them?

I would get a new receiver. Onkyo HDMI boards are trouble. Repairing your receiver is good money after bad.

It's still under warranty so not paying anything for this repair. It's just the wait for the parts to arrive

Seems like a reasonable option, and quite possible as many parts on avrs in the same model series aren't likely too different. If you found any further issues afterwards you'd still have warranty to further help, too. Curious, are you dealing with Onkyo USA for this or the new distributor etc?

None, I love abroad so the it's a different distributor who I'm working with.

In that case using a different HDMI board that is compatible would not be a problem. You might wait a very long time for the other board, as Onkyo have very serious problems right now. There is a very good chance they will not be around much longer. So I would take the offer of that board and run. Once they declare bankruptcy it will be new receiver time for you. Take that offer while you can!
