Denon AVR-X4100W occasional pop on one rear channel

Howdy yall,

Was hoping I could get some advice on this annoying problem I am having with my home system.

Occasionally I get a pop on my right rear channel surround speaker. I have verified it is not the speaker or wire by switching speakers so it is coming from the receiver. It pops anywhere from every hour to every few minutes. No rhyme or reason to the timing. One thing is consistent is that it always takes up to an hour after I turn on the receiver to get the first pop.The pop is not loud but very present.

I have quite a few items hooked up which include two pre-amps, two DTV receivers, a TV, another monitor, DVD player and an Apple TV. I have disconnected them all one at a time to see if they were a source but always get a pop. I have the receiver along with all the mentioned components hooked up to a 12 year old Monster surge protector.

The receiver does not have a ground to its power cord although the surge protect does. Could it be possible that it could be a bit of static discharge? Has anyone else had this problem?

I have had this receiver about six years and only recently has this problem showed up. I have not added any new components in years.

Thanks for listening and any ideas would be deeply appreciated.

Have you tried a soft reset (unplugging the avr from power for a bit), or a hard reset (factory/microprocessor reset per your manual)? You'll have to go thru setup again if you do the latter.

Thank you for the reply!

I have tried unplugging but not the reset. I guess I hesitate because of all the different little settings I have. But you have encouraged me to give it a go. What could go wrong? :)

I will report back with the results.

Thanks again.

Does your avr permit you to copy Audyssey settings to your computer? I have a 4520 that I can do that with, helps out a bit on a full reset....

Unfortunately to me that sounds like bad news. It sounds as if you have a power transistor or driver transistor breaking down. There probably is a hole in the emiiter collector junction, most likely of a power transistor in that channel. This results in sudden discharges between emitter and collector. This is commonly a prelude to total failure. When that happens there is a short between that collector and emitter which makes the whole receiver go into protection and shut down. One to three resets is worth ago. If I have the problem identified resets will not work. The fact that it happens when the unit is well heated up makes this more suspicious.

I see that is only a 2019 model. If that is still under warranty, you need to send it in for warranty service pronto, or you will be a brief owner of that unit most likely.

Funnily enough this kind of problem usually shows up when a unit is pretty new.

Man did I come to the right place. I got in the book and it did have a save function and I discovered I could save the settings and reload on my computer. And did so with great success!!! THANK YOU!!!

Now lets see if the problems continue.

This has been my concern from the word go. The unit is well out of warrantee since it was purchased about six years ago. I believe it has been discontinued as well.

Is it worth a shot at maintenance? Or better just get a new one. I use this receiver a whole bunch since it is the brains of my entire system. If anything is on, it is on.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

To update my situation I did a reset three times and still got the pop. My past experience is that this is most likely the start of failure. I do work my equipment very much and the consequence is just this. Things get worn out.

I decided to purchase a new receiver and now have a Denon AVR X4700H and have to say is such a nice upgrade! Always takes a while to get these things dialed in but I really love the new receiver for me.

So problem solved. I have like three other Denon receivers I do not use anymore. All have small issues but what on earth do I do with these things? Is recycle the only option or are there peeps out there that can use these things?

Thanks again to all that took the time here!

I would recycle the one that pops. However, people pay good money on eBay and other sites for older receivers that work well in good cosmetic condition.

So let me get this straight. Including this X4100, you now have FOUR Denon AVRs that have "small issues" that you don't use anymore. Yet, you still bought ANOTHER Denon? :D

On the surface that may sound crazy but really only two have small issues and as much as I use them not unexpected to have some failures. Each one was an upgrade over the other. Love the AVR X4700H I just acquired.

After my second Denon I purchased a Yamaha and after much tweaking it just did not sound as good or manage my system well. To be honest I found it to be a much worse product than what I had been use to having. I returned it within a couple weeks and was much happier with the Denon I replaced that one with. That was about 13 years ago so maybe Yamaha is producing a better product now. I have seen more people are happy with Denon than any other choice. Just my personal experience.

I have always checked other brands but found to be happy with the Denon. So for me why change a good thing especially since I tried once with much regret. It is not for everyone but it is for me.
