Thoughts on NHT SW12 sub? Modern thoughts please, I know its older.

With a low end -3dB downpoint of 27 Hz it will quite simply get destroyed by a modern SVS or any of the other frequently recommended subs in these parts.

You could also compare it against subs tested at data-bass.com or in Brent Butterworth's testing database....

I was given some NHT speakers and a sub. I'm curious how it would do against some of the more modern SVS and other offerings.
Can't beat Free. But Yes there are better performers

Is the use more for music or movies?
- If more for music, it should be fine.
- If more for movies, as others have said, there is room for improvement.

My brother has my NHT SW2P 10" sub with 80W amp in his open living room (open to kitchen, dining, foyer) that is 18'x20'x12' ceiling. Sounds good and shakes all the walls just fine.

So just see how it plays in your room. If it sound great, then it's good enough.

I think it'll do fine in a smaller room. You're not going to get super deep subterranean bass but it'll outperform most speakers in that area and probably sound pretty decent doing it. Yes, there are better modern options out there now. None of them are free tho! As a gift I'd say you made out alright!

As has been said, it is not the deepest or loudest by any means, but the real question is how much do you need?
What have you had in your past?
If you will use it for music, the low end is not a factor unless you are a pipe organ afficinado or listen to some of the deeper synthesized bass. Most traditional instruments drop out at above 30Hz. For HT, you will be missing out on the lower frequencies. On the other hand, if this is your first sub, you will love it for the bass it adds to your system!
How loud is a question best answered by testing it in your room at your volume with your content.
One of the issues I have with that sub is it doesn't offer much in adjustment to allow you to tune it to your room. That is one of the biggest improvements and has now become fairly common.

In my experience with NHT (a Classic 3 speaker) and by reputation, they make well designed and well built products and I'm betting at ~15 years old, it is still works great!
Do the subwoofer crawl (link below) and see how it works for you. Subs can be problematic because your room controls so much about how it sounds. If you are lucky, you can dial it in quite nicely, if not, you may need to try something else.
But it is free and of good quality, so give it a chance!

PS - the time you put into the sub crawl will generally prove valuable should you get another sub later, because the sweet spot for one sub usually carries well to a different sub.

Hah, thanks for your honesty. I had a feeling it would something like that.

It will be used as a small game/music movie system for me and buddies when they come over.

Thanks for your very detailed response. The only other real sub I have had is the polk psw505. I have researched buying new speakers a few times but could never make up my mind so I just didn't buy anything. The house should be finished in January and then I'll be able to take all this in. I plan on doing black Friday shopping for the larger sub that I will need for my main living area. That area will be about 4300 cubic feet. I plan to use the nht st4 towers and matching center for the main room as well.

I have a 505 in my house. It’s not very good but I have it in a special situation with a minidsp and two other very good subs so...
IMO the NHT will sound better overall than the Polk but with a similar roll off. Still, it will get DESTROYED by anything modern from our favorite manufacturers but in a smaller music system it will be pretty good even still. Since you have it, you have to at least use it somewhere!
And also, the review was done by Ed Mullen of SVS. He also did a review of the 505 which you can find there, and would likely be fun for you to compare his notes.

Thanks for pointing that out, ill look it up tonight. I'll be buying one of the larger awesome subs for the main living area when companies start running holiday sales. When do you think the best time to buy is? Black friday, before or after?

Good question! The other guys might have some advice, but it seems like around that time, and up to Christmas there are deals to be had.
