Iam currently using a Yamaha RX-A 3020 AVR wanting to know if its possible to get sound to my tv from the cable box threw the AVR when its powdered off and just use the tv speakers . Now i use a HDMI to the tv from the cable box and run a digital coax cable to the receiver i would really like to have the HDMI threw the receiver when watching movies but not use the whole system when just watching regular tv shows etc . is there a setting in a menu to set this up iam open for ideas if anybody has experience with this .

Did you look thru the hdmi setup choices....on my non-Yamaha units that's available in a particular stand-by mode if desired (can't imagine wanting to ever use the tv's speakers myself). Why not just use your better speakers?

Well it’s for the wife and granddaughter mainly we don’t like to have it on when she stays over and the wife hasn’t a clue how to operate the setup and I don’t mind that but there is something on one menu page called pass threw or something like that but it’s kind of vague in its use at least to me . And I really don’t like the sound on movies by not useing the hdmi going threw the receiver and useing a digital co ax for sound it’s great for cd’s but seems limited on movie sound tracks at least to me .

My Yamaha 3060 has Standby pass through in the set-up menu. turn that on and you are good to go. The receiver doesn't need to be on to just watch TV
